The question as to whether or not Dodge County should be governed by a single commissioner or a board of commissioners may come to a vote this year, if legislation introduced by Georgia State Representative Jimmy Pruett is passed by the Georgia Legislature.
A ‘Notice of Intent to Introduce Local Legislation’ is running in the legal section of this week’s newspaper.
If the legislation is passed by the Georgia Legislature, the question, as to whether Dodge County should be governed by a single commissioner or a board of commissioners, would appear on the November 4, 2014 ballot. If the voters approve a single commissioner type of government, Representative Pruett would then have to write another piece of legislation making it happen.
That legislation would have to be introduced and passed by the Georgia House and Senate. If it passes both the House and Senate, it would then go to the governor for his signature.
If the governor signed the bill, the law would go into effect at the next commissioner’s election.
Also in this year’s session of the Georgia General Assembly, Pruett plans to introduce legislation that would change the Dodge County offices of chief magistrate, probate court judge and coroner from partisan elections to non partisan elections.
Now I don't believe that the citizens of Dodge County would vote to change the commission make up and be secure with letting all of the power of the county rest in the hands of one individual.
Ha, there is a "real enemy of mine enemy is my friend" thing going on here. Great the County Commissioners could use some support. They are really not corrupt as we would make them out to be. How effective are we towards the end of the month when we are trying to stretch the money until pay day? Magnify that on the scale of a full fiscal year of tight money and you get an understanding of the this is what we have to do and if there is anything left this is what we will try to do.
When the commissioners were not moving fast enough to give the voters a chance to vote on going back to a sole commissioner. Everyone feels that was a bad thing.
The voters have the ability to decide what they want to happen and put the issue to bed. I think that is a wonderful thing. Letting voters set the tone is something I'll always support and drink that Kool Aid on.
