The Dodge County Board of Education continued to finalize school staff positions at their regular scheduled school board meeting this past Thursday night. First day of school is set for Wednesday, August 21, 2013.
The school board accepted the resignation of Monte Smith, Dodge County Middle School (DCMS) guidance counselor; Tianna Patterson, school food services and Wanda Talley, North Dodge Elementary School (NDES) paraprofessional.
The school board approved the retirement of Beth Jordan, NDES teacher.
The following positions were filled: Amy Barron was hired as South Dodge Elementary School (SDES) guidance counselor; Elaine Pittman, Dodge Achievement Center teacher; Richard Gay, DCMS baseball coach and LaKeasha Hamilton, Dodge County High School (DCHS) assistant softball coach.
A leave request was approved for school food service employee Connie Harvey.

Special local option sales tax (SPLOST) income for the month of May 2013 totaled $151,830.32. The SPLOST fund balance as of July 31, 2013 was $3,393,145.00.
Expenditures during the month of July 2013 totaled $184,510.70 for technology, a cross-country shelter, architect fees and DCMS kitchen renovations.
The proposed fiscal year 2014 budget was approved to advertise in today’s edition of The Dodge County News. The school budget can be found on page 8B. The school board will have a called meeting at 5:30 p.m. on August 29, 2013 to officially adopt the fiscal year 2014 budget.
Vehicle insurance in the amount of $25,462.93 was approved from State Farm Insurance of McRae.
An invoice in the amount of $5,236.58 was approved for payment from One Call Now. This is for parent broadcasts from the schools.
A request from Bob Clardy of the DCHS band was approved to purchase a set of marching percussion and new music stands.
Director of curriculum and professional learning Dr. Lawanda Gillis provided the school board an instructional update at the meeting. Dr. Gillis informed the board Dodge County school employees logged 3,600 hours of professional learning over the summer.
The school board will participate in whole board training provided by Georgia School Boards Associations on August 15, 2013.
