The Eastman City Council voted unanimously to send Dodge County a letter that they would agree to accept 31.14 percent of the one percent Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) funds for the next 10 years with no stipulations. That is the same amount they have been receiving for the past 20 years.

At their last meeting, the county voted to send a proposal to the city that they would give the city 27 percent of the LOST funds.

In a letter dated January 27, 2012, from Interim Dodge County Manager Bobby Peacock, county road superintendent Tim Turner’s employment with Dodge County was terminated effective February 1, 2012.

Peacock’s letter stated, “We have decided to go in a different direction regarding the position of county road superintendent. This is to advise that your employment by the county is thereby terminated and you will therefore be dropped from the county medical insurance effective February 1, 2012. You will be paid for your vacation days earned, but not used, up to the maximum 24 days allowed.”

Rhine City Council and city attorney Joey Marchant offered no public comments regarding the $200,000.00 delinquent loan that is past due with Wilcox County State Bank at the regular scheduled city council meeting held on Thursday, January 26, 2012.

The loan was not listed on the meeting’s agenda and many questions remain as to the status of repayment and research of council minutes regarding a resolution dated June 16, 2010 and signed by mayor Carter Clements and attested by former city secretary June Sheffield on behalf of the City of Rhine.

The South Carolina primary ended the Thursday before the voting, at around 8:05 p.m. That’s when Newt Gingrich stopped berating CNN’s John King for asking him about his ex-wife Marianne’s allegation that he wanted an “open marriage.” Newt’s reply was a virtuoso display of bluff and indignation.

Vice Plagiarist Babbling Bumbling Joe Biden claimed back in 2010 that the Republicans spent $200 billion in attack ads against Barack Obama.

That was quite a feat, since total spending by all presidential candidates in 2008 was around $2.4 billion (a record amount) and everyone knows off year elections have far less spending than in presidential years. Just think - this character is next in line for the presidency. Next up behind Biden was Nancy Pelosi until the Republicans took over the House (thankfully) so now next up behind Biden is Republican John Boehner, who isn’t that great but is just glad to be there. Biden and Pelosi became valuable weapons for the opposition in the Republican resurgence in 2010.

Crying with no tears.
When one can cry and shed no tears, they must be hurting pretty badly. As we look at the response of many Americans to the many problems that are going on, one must think that they are crying but we see no tears. Many Americans seem to be living out the old cliché after all is said and done, more is said than done.

Eastman residents joined Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind, to pack 5,365 shoe boxes with toys, school supplies and necessity items. These gift-filled shoe boxes are making their way – or have already made their way – into the hands of needy children in 100 receiving countries.
