Joseph Bernard Phillips (age 32), of Eastman, escaped from the Dodge County jail on Friday evening, January 13 around 6:15 p.m. Phillips was captured Monday morning, January 16 around 10:30 a.m. in Atlanta by Dodge County deputies, the United States Marshall Service and Atlanta police officers. Two stolen vehicles have been recovered by Dodge County sheriff’s deputies over the Christmas holidays.
On Saturday, December 24, a man hunting called deputies to report a car parked in the woods about 150 yards off of the Abbeville Highway just two miles north of the Green Light Savoy near Cleveland Lane. The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office has arrested three (3) people for furnishing contraband to inmates in the Dodge County jail, including a former sheriff’s employee.

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office has issued several safety reminders to help ensure county residents have a safe holiday season. Dodge County Sheriff Jeff Hinson said, “Christmas is a special time of year for folks in Dodge County as they gather with their families and celebrate the birth of Jesus. However, unfortunately, at this time of the year also, thieves take advantage of people who are distracted by the seasons’ hustle and bustle.” [Full Story »] 

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office has received $4,750.00 from three sources designated for the purchase of bullet resistant vests for deputies.

Last week the sheriff’s office received notice that a matching grant from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) has been awarded to the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office, in this year’s Federal Fiscal Budget, in order to purchase bullet proof vests. The Justice Department announced that up to $2,450.00 is available to the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office to purchase ballistic vests. The federal grant is a 50/50 matching grant requiring local governments to expend the same amount of money on the purchase. [Full Story »]

Dodge County sheriff’s deputies have experienced a significant increase in traffic accidents involving deer over the last week. Dodge County Sheriff Jeff Hinson said that deputies have worked as many as four to six wrecks in one shift. Sheriff Hinson said most of the wrecks have been relatively minor with no injuries to drivers or passengers with a few exceptions. [Full Story »] 

Dodge County Sheriff’s deputies arrested an Eastman man on drug charges early Saturday morning on October 1. The arrest took place after deputies were called to Cofield’s Trailer Park on the McRae Highway. Trey Victor Atkinson (age 28), was charged by narcotics investigators with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug related objects. [Full Story »]
