Players Speak
Dodge County Schools Title I program had Keith Davis and Clarence Lee visit each school on May 3, 2011 to discuss issues that students face daily, such as making wise decisions, respecting each other, reaching goals and overcoming adversity. Davis, a former college and professional football player, had to overcome a learning disability. He graduated from the University of Southern California with the team’s highest grade point average and a degree in Business Finance. Lee never played sports in high school, but later became a successful football player at Florida State University while earning a double math major. He earned two Rose Bowl Championship rings while playing under coach Bobby Bowden. Lee also gave inspiring words to students on how to reach their potential in life. Davis and Lee spoke to parents and students Tuesday night on the importance of being a great parent.

Taylor named All-Middle Georgia GHSA Baseball Player of the Year

Dodge County Indian Clint Taylor was named 2011 GHSA Middle Georgia Baseball Player of the Year by The Telegraph on Monday, June 13.
Taylor was a dominate pitcher for the Indians this year with 12 wins in 14 starts. He had an earned run average of 1.21 with 70 strikeouts to 10 walks. At the plate, Taylor provided power and a consistent bat for the Indians as well.
He hit .583 with 10 homeruns, 10 doubles and 42 runs batted in. With these numbers, Taylor was only struck out five times during the season.
Taylor helped to lead the Indians to one of their best seasons, 20-9 and 10-2, in region play that included a region championship.
The Indians fell short in the “Sweet 16” round of the state playoffs to an Appling County team that made it to the final four. [Full Story »]

The Dodge County seven and eight boys’ all-star baseball team has won their first three tournaments of the year and remain undefeated. The boys placed first in the Soperton, Cochran, and Telfair tournaments. Players on the team are Cole Cranford, Landin Crummey, Jarred Frost, Kade Harpe, Andrew Lowery, Mason Mangham, Trace Moore, Joshua Rogers, Cody Ruffin, Peyton Smith, Jonathan Stokes, and Brodie Woodard. Coaches for the team are Shane Mangham, Jon Ruffin, and Chris Lowery.

The Eastman-Dodge County Recreation Department 12U girls’ all-star team participated in the Hawkinsville-Pulaski County Recreation Department Invitational Tournament on June 1-4. 2011. Dodge was forced to forfeit the first game on June 1 because the team was playing in Lyons. On Thursday, June 2, the girls played in Lyons, then headed to Hawkinsville to battle their first game in the loser’s bracket. Dodge defeated rival Bleckley County 21-0. On Saturday, June 4, Dodge continued to overcome their opponents defeating Telfair County 14-0. Dodge then faced undefeated Wilcox County. Dodge girls did not hold back. They won 12-1, therefore they had to play Wilcox again in order to clinch the championship. Dodge came out victorious beating Wilcox 14-1. State softball tournament coming to Eastman

The Eastman-Dodge County Recreation Department (EDRD) will be hosting its first girls’ state softball tournament from July 6-9, 2011, with over 6,000 visitors expected to watch the tournament. By offering these travelers a friendly welcome and well-stocked businesses and restaurants, we can guarantee that they will want to return next year!
To try and capture as much economic benefit as possible for Dodge County, the Eastman-Dodge County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a street dance and festival Thursday, July 7 from 7:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. The EDRD is hosting a community-planning meeting June 16 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss what business owners and the community needs to do to prepare for this influx of visitors. The 8u all-stars won first place in their first tournament in Hawkinsville on May 31-June 2, 2011. They came from behind in extra innings and won the championship game 20 to 19. The girls were undefeated the entire tournament. Buddy Ball Held

The Second Annual Spring Buddy Ball was held on May 7, 2011. Buddy Ball is a baseball game for children with special needs who would not ordinarily have the opportunity to participate in team sports. Sixty children with special needs, ages three to 15 from Dodge, Bleckley, and Pulaski Counties, participated in this event. Special appreciation to all volunteers and donors that helped to make this event possible. Pictured is Nicholas Burkard, a student at North Dodge Elementary School, and his buddy, Macy Deeson.
