For the time being, Derek Hutcheson will not be moving his State Farm Insurance Agency to the corner of Ninth Avenue and Oak Street.

At their meeting on Monday, November 28, the Eastman City Council voted against spot zoning the one piece of property on the corner from residential to professional, even though it was passed by the Eastman Planning and Zoning Board. [Full Story »]

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office continues to make arrests for thefts, burglaries and drugs. Sheriff’s investigators have arrested the third alleged offender in the burglaries that occurred on Nobles Road and West Chicken Road. Lemaritre Allen (age 22), of Chester, has been charged with two counts each of burglary, theft by taking, and criminal trespass in connection with the investigation. [Full Story »]

On Monday night November 21, around 7:00 p.m., the Dodge-Wilcox 911 Center received an emergency request of mutual aid from the Telfair-Wheeler 911 Center due to a riot at the Telfair County State Prison located in Helena. The 911 centers relayed that the Telfair County Sheriff and Helena Police Chief were requesting “all available” officers and resources to immediately respond. Dodge County sheriff’s deputies along with officers from the Eastman Police Department responded to the call for help. [Full Story »]

County makes cuts to the budget for 2012

The Dodge County Board of Commissioners acted on recommendations from county manager Kelly Bowen that will save the county money and cut costs from the 2012 budget. Dodge County is currently in a financial crisis and the board of commissioners has been evaluating the current budget to financially improve the operating costs of the county.

In their regularly scheduled meeting held on Monday, November 20, Bowen presented information to the board in an email dated November 4, 2011. The information included health insurance costs of all county employees, proposed furlough days for all county employees, overtime savings specifically in the EMS and E911 departments, monthly expense allowances of county elected officials and proposed changes to recurring monthly expenses such as phones, copiers and utility bills. Water bill payments in the form of cash are missing for from the City of Rhine’s bank accounts.

In a city council meeting on Thursday, November 3, Rhine’s city attorney Joey Marchant addressed Mayor Carter Clements and the city council members regarding missing water bill deposits. From January 2010 to June 2010, the total cash deposited was approximately $7,593.78. From January 2011 to June 2011, the total cash deposited was approximately $251.00. [Full Story »]

Elections were held in Dodge County and the cities of Eastman, Chester and Rhine on Tuesday, November 8. The following are the results of those elections.

Only 1302 people voted countywide in the referendum to decide whether or not a one percent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) would be extended for the Dodge County School System.

The referendum passed by a vote of 971 to 331. [Full Story »]

Deputies recover vehicle, arrest fugutive

Dodge County sheriff’s deputies recovered a stolen Pontiac Firebird on Monday, November 14, from a location on Dove Lane near Eastman.

The vehicle had been reported stolen out of Murphy, North Carolina. The alleged suspect of the vehicle theft, Patricia Ann Waldroup (age 24), was arrested on outstanding felony warrants from Cherokee County, North Carolina. Waldroup has been booked into the Dodge County jail and is awaiting extradition back to North Carolina. [Full Story »]

Dodge County sheriff’s deputies and emergency personnel were called to a residence on the Soperton Highway last Wednesday afternoon, November 2, shortly after 1:30 p.m. in reference to a shooting. The caller stated that a female had been shot in the arm at that location. [Full Story »]
