Governor Sonny Perdue signed House Bill 23 on Friday, June 4.

The legislation, sponsored by Representative Matt Ramsey, makes it illegal for anyone under 18 to use a cell phone while driving.

“We need to do everything possible to focus young drivers on the road ahead,” said Governor Perdue regarding HB 23. “I want to thank Representative Ramsey for working hard on this bill.” [Full Story »] 

Dodge County High School graduated 184 students, including 33 honor graduates, on Friday night, June 4.

Commencement exercises were held outside at Memorial Stadium.

There is currently a telephone scam circulating.

Individuals are being contacted via cell phone from an automated service posing as a bank stating their debit/atm card has been de-activated and the card number, pin number and expiration date is required to re-activate the card. [Full Story »] 

Several individuals were taken to Dodge County Hospital after being involved in a three vehicle accident at the intersection of Griffin Street and Plaza Drive on May 28, 2010.

Shane Michael Kitchens (34), of Eastman, was driving a 2001 Toyota Tacoma west on Griffin Street when he attempted to stop his vehicle and slid into the rear of Kevin Gary Sykes (37), of Eastman. [Full Story »] 

Graduation for Dodge County High School will be held on Friday, June 4 at 8:00 p.m. at Memorial Stadium (weather permitting) at the Dodge County Middle School (old high school).

If weather does not permit, graduation will be moved to the gymnasium at the new high school.

If graduation has to be moved to the gymnasium, each graduate has seven tickets for their family and guests to get in.
For the rest of those wanting to see the graduation, closed circuit televisions will be set up in the high school media center and lunchroom.

For everyone planning to attend graduation, please make sure you arrive early. The gates/doors to the stadium or gymnasium will be locked at 8:00 p.m. and no one else will be allowed to enter. [Full Story »]

A Dodge County Deputy Sheriff was arrested and booked into the Dodge County jail Tuesday (05/25/10) afternoon around 3:30 p.m.

Deputy Dean Smith turned himself into Sheriff Jeff Hinson after an agent from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) swore out three (3) arrest warrants before a Superior Court Judge against Smith.

The warrants issued were for simple battery, criminal trespass, and terroristic threats and acts. Smith has been released from the Dodge County jail on a $7,500.00 property bond set by the Superior Court.

Smith has been on administrative leave since Monday, May 10, 2010, after a citizen filed a formal internal affairs complaint with the sheriff’s office concerning an off duty incident which occurred Friday evening May 7, 2010. [Full Story »] 

The Georgia State Board of Education (SBOE), on Monday, May 24, granted an exemption of all statutory and regulatory class size maximums for the 2010-2011 school year.

Due to the continued economic downturn that has caused declines in state and local revenue, the SBOE recognized the need to give school districts more flexibility.

Local school districts will be required to submit a local board resolution to the Georgia Department of Education before class size maximums may exceed the current requirements. [Full Story »]
