An Eastman woman died in a house fire at her home early Sunday morning, May 12.

At the recommendation of county attorney John Harrington, the Dodge County Board of Commissioners appointed provisional representation to the Dodge County-Eastman Development Authority (DCEDA).

Representative Jimmy Pruett introduced legislation on March 13, 2012 to provide for membership of the DCEDA; to provide a statement of authority; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; to provide for an effective date; and for other purposes. The legislation also added two additional members to the authority and changed the way members were appointed. [Full Story »]

Altercation leads to wreck

Emergency personnel were dispatched to a wreck on the Cochran Highway near Antioch Church Road around 9:00 p.m. last Saturday night, May 5. An off duty paramedic traveling the same highway was one of the first people to stop and render aid. Upon arrival, the two drivers of the two vehicles were fighting. One driver was allegedly hitting the other driver in the head with a hammer. The drivers were separated and transported to Dodge County Hospital for their injuries. [Full Story »]

On Friday night, a culmination of thirteen years of diligence in academics will occur for nearly 200 students in Dodge County’s Memorial Stadium as members of the Class of 2012 proudly take their walk across the graduation stage.

The graduating class of Dodge County High School (DCHS) includes 199 students, 20 earning the title of honor graduate and being awarded a gold stole. These students, over the course of their four years in high school, have taken two units of the same foreign language, a half unit of computer applications, a half unit of speech and have earned an overall academic average of 94. Students who do not have a 94 average but have maintained a 90 average and have a score of 1,185 or higher on the verbal and math sections on the SAT or 26 or better on the ACT and have met all requirements will also be considered an honor graduate. On Saturday, January 25, 2012, the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government facilitated a community leadership group meeting at the Eastman-Dodge County Chamber Of Commerce Hall. Lead by Gordon Maner, senior public service associate, the meeting was attended by the chairman of the Dodge County Board of Commissioners and one other commissioner, two Eastman council members, chairman of the chamber of commerce, chairman and one member of the airport authority, and chairman of the development authority to begin conversation to open doors for the common good of Dodge County. The Eastman Youth Development Campus (YDC) in Dodge County, is one of just 10 juvenile detention facilities in the country selected to participate in this year’s nationwide arts program called the ‘Emanuel Project’. The motivational arts program offers a compelling mural project to provide youth in detention a unique hands-on opportunity to work with the nationally renowned painter, sculptor and muralist Emanuel Martinez, as he paints a 100-foot mural specially designed to enhance the DJJ’s Youth Development Campus in Eastman. Windell Gillis found something very unusual when he went to check on his cows on Saturday, April 14.

He found a four month old bull calf dead in the field. Gillis noticed that the calf had damage to one of its eyes. Then, he noticed something very unusual. A patch of hide approximately five inches across in a perfect circle was missing from the calf. [Full Story »]

The City of Rhine’s council members were greeted with a visit from a representative from Wilcox County State Bank at their regularly scheduled meeting held on Thursday, April 26, 2012.

Lewis Sheffield, branch manager and compliance officer for Wilcox County State Bank, contacted the city clerk and asked to be placed on the council’s agenda. While some of the city council members were aware of his planned attendance, the mayor, Carter Clements, was surprised as Clements told Sheffield, “This is a surprise. After Georgia Governor Nathan Deal signed House Bill 1251 on April 11, 2012, introduced by Georgia State Representative Jimmy Pruett, the Dodge County-Eastman Development Authority no longer had any members.

The bill revamps how members to the board are to be appointed. The bill provides appointments to the board to be two members appointed by the City of Eastman city council, of which one must be a city council person and one a citizen of Dodge County, two members appointed by the Dodge County commissioners, of which one will be a commissioner and the other a citizen of Dodge County, two members appointed by the Heart of Georgia Regional Airport Authority, one of which will be a member of the airport authority and one citizen of Dodge County, and the seventh member will be a Dodge County citizen appointed by the state representative, (currently Jimmy Pruett) who represents Dodge County.
