A runoff election has been set between Timmy Burnham and Brian Watkins after none of the four candidates running for the Dodge County Commission District 3 post garnered more than 50 percent of the votes cast in the Tuesday, March 16 special election.

Burnham and Watkins were the two top vote getters in the election to fill the unexpired term of the late Edwin Burnham.

The Dodge County School System has received notification that three schools in the district have been awarded the Title I Distinguished School status for 2009 – 2010.

This recognition is authorized in Section 117 of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. In order for a school to be named a Title I Distinguished School, the school must make AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) for at least three consecutive years.

In the early morning hours of Friday, March 19, Dodge County Sheriff’s deputies went to investigate a complaint at a residence on Friendship Church Road. The owner of the residence was a patient in a nursing home and had reported to sheriff’s deputies that someone was illegally occupying her home. The Dodge County High Indians baseball team won two sub region games last week and dropped one non-region game. The Indians defeated East Laurens on Tuesday, March 16, 3-2; lost to West Laurens, 13-3 on Thursday, March 18 and defeated Vidalia, 5-2 on Friday, March 19. The Indians are now 5-4 overall and most importantly, 2-0 in the sub region.

In Tuesday’s game with East Laurens, Christian Miller picked up the win on the mound and is now 2-1 on the season. Miller allowed three hits and one earned run while striking out four. Leading batters for Dodge were: Brandon Beck was 1-for-3 with a run scored; Jordan Smith was 1-for-3; Clint Taylor had an RBI; Herschel Anderson, Brady Blalock and Christian Miller all had hits. O.J. Hogan had a stolen base and a run scored.

Stepping up at the plate for the Indians in their 13-3 loss to West Laurens was: Brandon Beck was 2-for-3 with a double; Jo Jo Harrison was 1-for-3; Trent Mitchell went 1-for-1 with two runs scored; Christian Miller was 1-for-2 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored; Cole Evans had a sacrifice bunt and an RBI; Clint Taylor was 1-for-2 with a double.
