Gets good start
Former Dodge High Lady Indian Faith Manning is off to a very good start with the Covenant College Lady Scots. Manning is hitting 0.314 on the year with a 0.343 slugging percentage. She currently has five runs batted in, with a double and stolen base. She is second on the team with 26 putouts.

Holloway gets win
Former Dodge Lady Indian Hayley Holloway got her first win pitching as a member of Jacksonville University on Saturday. Holloway went six and one-third innings and allowed only four hits in a 1-0 win over Providence.

Hits Homerun
Former Dodge County Lady Indian shortstop Margaret Simmons has been named Southern States Athletics Conference Softball Player of the Week. Simmons is now the starting shortstop for the Middle Georgia State University Lady Knights. She hit .440 last week, as she went 11-24, including a pair of doubles, a pair of two-run homers and five RBI’s. She had six runs scored and she slugged a strong .760 during the four-game series in Plant City, Florida. The Lady Knights had a 3-3 week, as all three losses came to nationally ranked teams. Simmons is the starting shortstop and batting in the leadoff position for the Lady Knights.

Indians lose to Laney in first round of state tournament

The Dodge County High School (DCHS) Indian Basketball team (16-9) finished in fourth place in the Region 3AA tournament and entered the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) State Tournament as the fourth seed from the region. The Indians had to travel on Friday, February 16, 2018 to Augusta, to face the number one seeded and third ranked Laney Wildcats (25-3) from Region 4AA.
The Indians trailed 11-21 after one quarter against Laney. Chris Clark led Dodge with five points in the quarter.
Nick Cummings put in 11 points in the second quarter to the lead the Indians as they trailed 28-37 at halftime.
Dodge outscored Laney 14-8 in the third quarter to close the gap to 42-45 after three quarters. Noah Wilcox led the Indians with four points in the third.
The Indians got as close as 44-45 with seven minutes left in the game and only trailed 46-49 at the five minute 53 second mark and were down 48-54 with four minutes 13 seconds left, but the Wildcats hit some big shots down the stretch to pull away, defeating the Indians, 53-66.

The third ranked Dodge County High School (DCHS) Squaws (24-4) Basketball team entered the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) AA State Tournament as a number one seed from Region 3AA after winning the 2018 Region Championship. The Squaws hosted the fourth seeded Jefferson County (12-13) Lady Warriors from Region 4AA on Saturday, February 17, 2018 in Eastman, and defeated them by a score of 68-45.
Dodge outscored the Lady Warriors 23-3 in the first quarter, led by Europe Brown with nine points including a three-pointer. Zannesia Mitchel and Destanee Wright each had three points in the second quarter as the Squaws outscored Jefferson 12-11 and extended their lead to 35-14 at the half.
The Squaws outscored Jefferson County 14-10 in the third quarter to lead 49-24. Destanee Wright and LaShauna Coley led in third with five points each. Wright led Dodge in the final quarter with six points, as the Squaws played a lot of younger players in the final quarter and were outscored 19-21, but took the win, 68-45.
Final scoring for the Squaws was Destanee Wright, 20 points; Europe Brown, 15 points including a three-pointer; Zannesia Mitchell, ten points including a three-pointer; LaShauna Coley, seven points; Kaonta Goolsby, four points; Kylie Hart, a three-pointer; Precious Coleman, two points; Cania Dawson, two points; Cheyenne Hunt, two points; Makayla Hall, two points and Jazmine Mizell, one point.

Dumpsters top county agenda
Complaints about trash and a city’s plea for help against crime were at the integral points of discussion at Monday night’s meeting of the Dodge County Board of Commissioners.
Chester Mayor Glynn Pittman appeared before the board to ask for help in eliminating crime in the rural city.
Pittman told the board, “I don’t normally come here to ask for anything as we try to handle things in Chester without having to bother anyone.”
“But, I have got to have some help,” he explained. “I am not here to bash the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office or Lynn Sheffield…they have a lot to do and are doing the best they can with what they have. I tried to research and find out more before coming here. I am not here to complain. I am here hoping you can give me some guidance on what to do.”
According to Pittman, the crime rate has increased in Chester. In the last few weeks, Pittman said, “We had a camp house broken into, the apartments have had windows broken out and residents’ homes have been vandalized.” He added that there have been several robberies on Phillips Street, and Pittman said the Shorty’s Quick Stop, “the only store we have in town was robbed.” Someone walked in with an aerosol can and a lighter and walked away with cash.
“I just don’t know what to do. We need some help,” Pittman pleaded.
Dodge County Commission Chair Dan McCranie told Pittman that the commissioners would look into the situation and will get back with him. “I am not real sure how that works with a city getting a police force…last year, the sheriff came before us, and we gave him an increase in his budget.”
