What happened to the good old days in Eastman?

When I was a teenager, we had the movies on Friday, Lake Destiny on Saturday and church and Tripp’s Beach on Sunday. I have raised two kids here and we had Jaybird Springs for them. Well, now I have two grandkids, they are all about sports; thank God for Bodie Gray and the recreation department. But to all parents, what do your children have for fun and entertainment?

In 2010 we don’t have anything for our young people to do except drugs and crime. I don’t want that for mine, do you? We need a safe and supervised place for these children to go no matter what their race or income may be and a non-membership place as well.
So what can we as parents and concerned citizens of Dodge County do about this? Yet we wonder why the crime rate is up and the drugs are still here. If these children had a non-membership game room and pool to go to, that would take thenm off the streets. It would help their self-esteem and build their hopes of a better future.

I am willing to do whatever it takes to go the extra mile to help these children out, are you? There needs to be more parent involvement where these children’s safety is concerned. We have so many empty buildings in Eastman that are just sitting looking like an eyesore that could potentially become a game room or some sort of safe haven for these children to go and hang out, play games, talk, dance, etc. If I as an adult can feel this way, just think how these children feel.

We have volunteer work going on for other needs in our town and we have probationers who have community service hours that have to be done, so why can’t some of this be designated toward a building for our children?

These children are our future, they deserve something to be prepared for them. Comments, feedback or any suggestions would be appreciated.

You all are very much on target as to what is happening to the youths of Eastman. Yes I agree when I grew up here life seemed so simple then because we lived life in a slow lane but the youth of today is a new generation that cannot live as we did and make do as we did so therefore we need to have some form of entertaiment here so they can have an outlet to socialize outside of school and home. The only thing tha I can suggest is that someone draw up a petition for all to sign who are intrested in what you and I would like to see as a change in Eastman for the youths. I have often sit and thought about them just as you have. I am thrilled to know that someone like yourselves are comming forward to voice their concern. I pray that it doesnot fall on deaf ears but if it does then we should continue to keep this matter on the front burner then maybe something will get done. What you are asking is not too much for this city to do, they should care about the old and the young because we have a mixture here. At one point I thought of working with the preteen girls and call it girl's night out on Friday. The girls would be welcome to come to my house for a cookout and watch a movie or play games but they would not be allowed to sleep over they must be picked up by an adult who has a parent's permission to do so. If you cannot start with a large group perhaps you can just reach out and touch a child's life in a postive way. It is very sad that the children here has no outlet and if they did then maybe they could stay out of trouble. Yes we have a juvenile justice center but no place for the kids to go for entertainment before they reach that point. This is from a mother of 3 and a grandmother of 5. Our kids are precious cargo that we should handle with care. God Bless!

I totally agree and I remember being able to do all of those things in Eastman and I now live in Cochran and they are in the same boat. We need our local leaders to do something before it way out of hand I pray that we can do something for our youngsters to show them that they are important to us and do not have to rely on the ways of the world and that there is people that do care about their future and what they do. Maybe if we take this major leap for our kids our leaders that were elected in will notice and do something for our future as well.
