A car and an 18-wheeler collided at the intersection of Griffin Street and Legion Drive when the driver of the car apparently pulled into the path of the truck.
According to the police report, Lile Low (76), of Eastman, was driving his 1995 Ford Crown Victoria east on Griffin Street when he attempted to turn left onto Legion Drive, pulling into the path of Matthew Steven Johnson (29), of Eastman, who was driving a 2000 Peterbuilt tractor-trailer west on Griffin Street.
The accident happened at approximately 9:38 a.m. on Friday, July 23.

As I have said in the past this is a dangerous intersection in which I try to avoid. Now that we have had two accidents at this intersection in the past few months, will the city or dodge county intervene and maybe put a red light up. It is a night mare to come out onto Griffin when one is trying to make a left hand turn and it doesnot help to have the tractor trailers or logging truck come through the area. There is a way to route them over to Coleman Parkway and back into the city by turning by the Jamison Inn. They can go back out of the city back this way by Jamison onto Coleman Parkway. A no truck route should be enforced down Griffin because it is a problem and they are putting pot holes in the roads in which the city seems not to have mnoey to repair. This is a problem for the local residents cars and the trucking company donot give us money for repairs.

I totally agree that it is a bad intersection that needs a light! Hopefully soon the city can make that happen for us. In the defense of the trucks traveling that road I have to say that a large percentage of accidents involving semis are the fault of the other vehicle and see no reason under the sun that they should be rerouted because another driver cant see such a very large truck. Maybe all other classes of drivers should be required to take DOT physicals to ensure all drivers are in the physical condition and health to properly operate a motor vehicle not just those with a CDL. Pot holes are not caused by semis either but the combination of weather and traffic. If the city cant afford to fix this problem maybe a toll road would be the best idea since all traffic including local residents contribute to the pot holes. Although, that is a state highway and semis are required by law to pay heavy highway use taxes in every state traveled therefore they do give us money. It is shocking how people like to point fingers at a truck driver, owner and/or a trucking company whenever possible :(

How many accidents do we need at this intersection before the city finally puts in a stop light? This is getting ridiculous.

I disagree about the trucks not causing the pot holes those trucks weight much much more than the average pasenger vehicle even and SUV and when they are carrying freight or pulpwood they weight evenmore and according to law of science when weight of the axles contact the surface underneath they are bound to do damage because of the weight. The roadway on Grifin is a thin piece of asphalt with clay and waterlines running underneath the road,so I disagree with your comment about the trucks and will continue to say that this street is very narrow and the traffic can be heavy along it with cars and the trucks. There are no business that require trucks to come down the 200 block until they get to Walmart area so yes they should be rerouted and not one resident in this city has told me that they have recived money from a trucking company for car repair and this statement was only made to prove a point not that no one is asking for money from them. That is why trucks have to stop to weigh stations on the intertate so they DOT can see if they are over weight because they will cause damage to the roadway. I understand we need the trucks because this is the only way we get our merchandise to stores, I am a relative of several and truckers and I have rode cross crounty with one. I find it hard to believe that Griffin is not a state highway because it is in the city and when the sinkhole open up the city came out to repair it not the state workers if they would have the hole would have been repaired better than what it is. God Bless!

If you park in the parking lot and OBSERVE you will see the culprit is the truck operators and auto drivers. They "SPEED". People fly by there way above the speed limit and from Legion Dr, you cannot see very far to the left. Griffin St is called the RHINE, GA. EXPRESSWAY

I will volunteer to be a flag girl just to show you how proud I would be to have a redlight put at that intersection. Griffin Ave Griffin St. Some calls this Griffin St but I call it Griffin Ave because it runs paralel to the Avenues such as 2nd Ave which is laid out in the same direction. And Main St runs in the opposite direction. please City Manager (Bea) can you or chief (Becky Sheffield )help the citizens of Eastman out? Before we have a traffic fatality at Griffin and Legion Drive. We thank you kindly for your consideration.

If I had to give a name to this speeder's road I would name it The Eastman Speedway to Rhine. If I refuse to go the same as the speeder, I might have to pull over to the side.
