All members of the Eastman/Dodge County Chamber of Commerce and local officials were recently invited to attend a meeting to discuss the current and future impact of economic development in Dodge County.
“The chamber was extremely pleased that 42 persons attended and had open discussions on the issues that will make a difference in our community” said Kennon Graham, chairman of the chamber of commerce.
The sessions were facilitated by Pat Merritt of the Georgia EMC Community and Economic Development.
Merritt is no stranger to Dodge County; she has worked with this community for many years. She was instrumental in leading the group through determining their expectations for a productive planning session.
Presentations were given by key community leaders to inform the group on issues that relate to each area. Presentations were made by the city manager, county commission chairman, board of education, Middle Georgia College, Dodge County/Eastman Development Authority, the chamber of commerce, Heart of Georgia Airport Authority, Dodge County Hospital administrator and State Representative Jimmy Pruett. “It was encouraging to hear the many opportunities we have in this community. To see everyone present, excited and talking about how we can move forward, together” stated Judy Hemphill Madden, president of the chamber of commerce. Pat Merritt asked everyone to reflect on the presentations made by the community leaders and to identify the key assets and strengths of Dodge County related to job creation.
The group was asked to envision what Dodge County would look like in 2015 as a vibrant and energetic community. “The seven small groups gave interesting ‘vision observations’ of their idea of a healthy and strong community. The goals and actions steps made show true commitment from the attendees,” stated Graham.
“We were able to walk away with Forward Dodge having four committees that will continue to development and implement the actions steps”, said Madden. The four areas of focus for the community are: Committee on Public Relations/Marketing, Leadership Committee, Volunteer Committee, and Community Development Committee.
“It truly was rewarding to see that large of a group working together. Communication is the key to a renewed effort in setting goals and action steps,” stated John Jessup, chairman of the Dodge County/Eastman Development Authority.
