A Dodge County Deputy Sheriff was arrested and booked into the Dodge County Jail Tuesday (05/25/10) afternoon around 3:30 P.M.
Deputy Dean Smith turned himself into Sheriff Jeff Hinson after an Agent from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) swore out three (3) arrest warrants before a Superior Court Judge against Smith. The warrants issued were for Simple Battery, Criminal Trespass, and Terroristic Threats and Acts.
Smith has been released from the Dodge County Jail on a $7,500.00 property bond set by the Superior Court.
Smith has been on Administrative Leave since Monday May 10, 2010 after a citizen filed a formal Internal Affairs Complaint with the Sheriff’s Office concerning an off duty incident which occurred Friday evening May 7, 2010. The complainant and two (2) witnesses came forth the following Monday alleging that Smith, while off duty, physically assaulted and threatened the complainant. Sheriff Jeff Hinson immediately requested that the GBI look into the criminal aspect of the complaint.
Sheriff Hinson stated, “It is sad situation. However, no one is above the law and I hold all of my employees accountable for their actions or inactions whether they are on duty or off duty. The integrity of the Office of the Sheriff is essential in creating a trust and respect within the community.”
An Internal Affairs investigation into the incident will now be conducted by the Sheriff’s Office. The Deputy remains on Administrative Leave without pay.
all have already chosen a side. HOW SAD!
Please do so, that we might be better informed! I certainly have no stake in this, but I too would like to know both sides of the event.
On another note, our former Sheriff has been found guilty of crimes that are very similiar to the ones the President & his White House are committing all over the country. The only difference I can see is that Mr Obama & company offer jobs, and schools, and bridges--while the former sheriff just offered money and other things. Ironic, isn't it? The little guys pay again while the big ones never even get charged.
ALL law enforcement people ~take an OATH~ to uphold the law. It is a STANDARD that ALL of them must meet and they are all "supposed" to abide by that standard. Deputy Smith, unfortunately, IGNORED this oath. And, Yes, every officer should be held to this same standard. If they cannot uphold the law, at all times, they should get out of the business.
I was just pointing out that because the one person MAY have broken the law he was sworn to uphold does not mean we should lower the standards --on his behalf.
And as far as I can tell, --Nobody here has said that he IS guilty, everyone is saying IF he did this, then he should be treated just as everyone else who breaks the law. ((Well, except maybe, the "concerned citizen" who is just quoting a bunch of stuff he/she ..HEARD.))
