Recently the Dodge County High School (DCHS) Grappling Indians traveled to Toombs County to compete in the Sweet Onion Memorial Wrestling Tournament. Billed as the toughest tournament in the south with more than 25 teams from Florida and Georgia competing, it certainly proved to be a huge test for the Indians.
After two days of battling, sophomore Christian Grauberger emerged through a tough bracket filled with state placers at 126 pounds to earn a third place finish.
At 120 pounds, freshman Aiden Greer pinned each of his first three opponents and entered the semi-final round in good shape. However, he suffered a season ending injury during the match, which forced him to default and eventually placed sixth.
At 285 pounds, returning state placer, Aaron Spires also made it into the semi-final round where he lost a close match up. Suffering an earlier shoulder injury he was forced to default the rest of his bouts and earned a sixth place finish.
Also wrestling well during the tournament was junior Cam’ron McCloud who just fell short of the medal rounds at 220 pounds.
The Indians will compete next Saturday in the Area Traditional Tournament in their individual quests towards a state title.
