Hayley Holloway got the ball for Dodge in this key region match-up. She worked around her only walk of the game and a single in the first. She got three strikeouts to keep Pierce off the board. Allie Varnadoe opened the Dodge first with a walk and she advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on a sacrifice bunt by Faith Manning. Freshman, Abby Christian Manning, got a big two out hit to score Varnadoe for a 1 to 0 Dodge lead.
Holloway worked around a single in the second and the Lady Indians came to bat in the second and it would be a huge inning. Massingill singled to lead off and Caitlyn Gooch got her to second on a bunt. Things then started to go down hill in a hurry for Pierce. Walks to Kiley Dix and Juliana Belflower loaded the bases. Varnadoe singled home Massingill and Faith Manning reached on an error and it was a 3 to 0 Dodge lead. Margaret Simmons singled home Belflower for a 4 to 0 game. Dodge took advantage of another Pierce error and Massingill got her second hit of the inning that drove home a run and suddenly the game was out of reach and the Dodge lead was 7 to 0 after just two innings of play.
The Lady Indians added to the lead in the third. Dix singled to lead off the inning and she would score on another two out hit, this one by Faith Manning and an 8 to 0 Dodge lead. Holloway quickly took care of Pierce in the fourth and the Lady Indians kept the bats going in the inning. Holloway and Massingill got singles with one out. The hit was Massingill’s third hit of the night, Holloway scored for a 9 to 0 game. A walk to Gooch loaded the bases. Dix got her second hit of the night, Holloway scored for a 9 to 0 game. A wild pitch scored Massingill for a 10 to 0 Dodge lead. Belflower singled to put a pair of runners on base. Varnadoe drove in the game’s final run for an 11 to 0 Dodge lead.
Holloway retired the side in order in the fifth and the game was over because of the 11 to 0 score after four and one-half innings of play. A lot of teams would have been in real trouble on Tuesday because the Lady Indians were hitting on all cylinders.
Tuesday started with the junior varsity game with Dodge and Pierce. The Lady Indians trailed after the top of the first, 2 to 0. Dodge got on the board in the bottom of the third. Amber Maxwell doubled with two out. Laralin Rogers singled her home and that made it a 2 to 1 game. The Pierce lead increased to a 3 to 1 game with a solo homer in the fourth. The Lady Indians inched closer with an unearned run in the fifth. Hailey Hickman reached on an error and she scored on a wild pitch to cut it to a 3 to 2 game.
It remained that way going to the bottom of the seventh. The game became tied as Sara Lann blasted a line drive homer over the left center field fence for a 3 to 3 game. Jenna Hickman followed that with a single to left and she advanced to second on a passed ball. Jade Dowdy advanced her to third and with one out coach Susan Southerland called for the squeeze bunt and Lane Barrows got it down after fouling the first one off and Hickman came in with the winning run and a 4 to 3 score. Pierce walked off the field stunned about the loss. Little did they know what was coming next!
