The Dodge County High School Lady Indians rebounded from a tough region loss to win a pair of games last week. Dodge stepped out of region play to defeat Colquitt County 5 to 3. The Lady Indians returned to region play on Thursday as they beat Tattnall County 2 to 0 in a pitchers’ duel. Dodge’s scheduled games on Saturday with Jenkins and Beach were rained out.
Dodge trailed 1 to 0 as the team came to bat in the bottom of the first against Colquitt. Abby Christian Manning doubled to left with two outs. Margaret Simmons would tie the game at 1 to 1 with a single to left-center on the first pitch.
Colquitt would reclaim the lead with an unearned run in the second at 2 to 1. Dodge would rally in its half of the second again with two outs. Faith Manning and Juliana Bellflower would single. Allie Varnadoe would score Faith Manning with a single to tie the game at 2 to 2. Lizzie Massingill would single home Bellflower to give Dodge a 3 to 2 lead.
Haley Holloway would settle in on the mound for Dodge as she had seven strikeouts through the first four innings. Colquitt would stay tough as its team scored a run in the fifth to tie the game at 3 to 3.
The Lady Indians would take the lead back in the bottom of the inning. The Dodge damage would once again come with two outs. Abby Manning led off the inning with a single, but she was still there with two outs, and that set the stage for junior Caitlyn Gooch. She sent the first pitch deep over the left field fence to give Dodge a 5 to 3 lead. Yes, if you are keeping score at home, Dodge scored all 5 runs with two outs.
Holloway only allowed a single base runner the final two innings as Dodge hung on for a 5 to 3 win. She walked just one and she struck out 10.
Dodge returned to region play on Thursday as it played Tattnall County. The game was a pitchers’ battle for the majority of this one. The game was scoreless going to the Dodge fifth. Varnadoe and Massingill singled to led off the inning. Abby Christian Manning had a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners. Dodge continued to play small ball as Simmons reached on a bunt single that scored Varnadoe for a 1 to 0 Dodge lead. Massingill would score on an error for a 2 to 0 Dodge lead.
Those two runs would be enough, as junior pitcher Holloway was really on her game. She allowed only three hits in the game and none prior to the fifth as Dodge took a 2 to 0 win. She had no walks and 10 strikeouts in the win. There has been no make-up date as of yet for Saturday’s rainout.
