Eastman firemen were called to a fire at Shorty’s Used Cars on the Soperton Road at approximately 12:42 p.m. on Tuesday, August 11.
When firemen arrived, the shop area in the rear of the building was engulfed in flames. The fire quickly spread to the office area. It took firemen approximately two hours to get the fire under control.

As of presstime, the cause of the fire is unknown. The building and several cars were a total loss. Firefighters from Dodge CI also responded to the call.
On Monday, August 10, Eastman firemen were called to a house fire at 321 Bethel Street in Eastman at approximately 3:38 p.m. When firefighters arrived, the house was engulfed in flames. Firemen fought the fire for approximately four hours before bringing it under control. Additional fire units and firemen from Plainfield, Crossroads, Rhine, Roddy, Dodge CI and Wilcox CI also responded to the fire.
The house was owned by Ronald Chatting. The cause of the fire has been ruled as accidental.
The fire started in a bedroom in the house. The wood frame house sustained heavy damage to the structure.
On Thursday, August 6 at approximately 9:15 a.m., firefighters were called to the home of Chris Melton on El Bethel Church Road. When firemen arrived, the house was engulfed in flames. Firefighters from Chauncey, Crossroads, Milan, Dodge CI, Wilcox CI and Helena responded to the call.
It is believed that the fire started in the attic and was electrical in nature. The house was considered a total loss.

Fire is always something horrible. People could not only lose their homes but also life. I think that more people should put attention to what they do - checking electric installations more, using materials that do not burn to fill the empty places at home, not to smoke cigarettes at home etc. Of course everyone has a free will and freedom to do what he wants to do. But sometimes people don't remember that some laws are to protect them.
