On Saturday, February 21, the Dodge County High School (DCHS)Indians traveled to Savannah for their first two region games of the year.
The 1:00 p.m. game was against Jenkins High School. The Indians controlled the game up until the last inning. Cain Peterson got the start on the mound for the Indians. After a shortened appearance, Craig Barton came on in the relief. Barton held the Warriors to only one run through the sixth inning. The Indians had a good day at the plate and had pushed across seven runs.
After a scoreless top of the seventh, things went sour for the Indians. The bottom of the seventh started with three walks. Tyler Pruett came on in relief of Barton with the bases loaded and no outs. The inning continued with a single, deep fly ball, an untimely call reversal by the home plate umpire and a wild pitch. When the smoke settled Jenkins had come back to beat the Indians in the bottom of the seventh by a score of eight to seven.
Pitching for the Indians were: Peterson, one inning allowing two walks, three hits and one earned run; Barton, five innings allowing five walks, two hits, two earned runs and striking out six; Tyler Pruett allowed three hits and stuck out one.
Hitting for the Indians were: Tyler Pruett three for three with a homerun, a double and three runs batted in (RBIs); Cameron Coleman three for four; Peterson three for five with a double and two RBI’s; Chandler Davis two for four: JT Shields two for five with two RBI’s; Tad Honeycutt also added a single.
After the tough loss, it was time for a short, very quiet bus ride to Islands High School for the second game of the day. Lance Pruett started on the bump for the Indians and pitched a strong game. He went the entire seven innings allowing one run on three hits, four walks and striking out six.
The Indians continued their timely hitting and pushed four across to get their first region win by a final score of four to one. Hitting for the Indians were: Tyler Pruett four for four with two doubles and three RBI’s; Clint Thompson two for three; Shields two for four; Lance Pruett one for four with an RBI; Alize King with a single.
The Indians travel to Treutlen County on Thursday, February 26 and host a region game with Johnson from Savannah on Friday, February 27.
