Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) honored three (3) Dodge County Sheriff’s deputies for outstanding commitment to highway safety in the removal of drunk drivers from public roadways.

MADD invited deputy Dean Smith, sergeant Tony Riddle and captain Tony Winborn, along with sheriff Jeff Hinson, to the Golden Shield Honors Awards Banquet, which was held last Thursday at the Georgia International Convention Center in College Park.

MADD sponsored the banquet in partnership with the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS). Senior program specialist Precious Johnson, of Georgia’s MADD Organization, personally thanked the three (3) deputies for their personal dedication and partnership in fulfilling MADD’s mission.

Deputies Riddle, Smith and Winborn each received a bronze medal and a certificate from MADD and the GOHS for their dedication to DUI enforcement. Bronze medals from MADD were awarded to law enforcement officers who made between twenty-five (25) and fifty (50) DUI arrests during 2009. This is first award for deputies Riddle and Smith. This is the second consecutive award for Winborn.

Sheriff Jeff Hinson praised the work of the three (3) deputies stating that their zero tolerance approach to drunk driving saves lives and prevents injuries in Dodge County. Hinson stated that there were no alcohol related fatalities in Dodge County in 2009. Hinson stated that it is his belief that enforcement activities by Dodge County deputies greatly reduced the number of drunk drivers on Dodge County roads.

According to records from GOHS and the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), this is only the second time in the last ten (10) years that Dodge County has not had an alcohol related crash fatality. Dodge County has averaged two (2) alcohol related fatalities per year during that time period with the highest number being in 2001 and 2006 when there were four (4) fatalities in each year.

Other agencies in the immediate area with officers receiving awards included GSP, the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office, the Dublin and East Dublin Police Departments.
Sheriff Jeff Hinson reminds the public that his deputies have zero tolerance for drunk drivers. Hinson stated that if you drink and drive that you will be arrested and spend a minimum of twelve (12) hours in jail.
