The Middle Georgia 12U Hurricane fast pitch softball team traveled to Fayetteville on March 26-28, 2010 to participate in the King of the Mountain (KOM) tournament.
This tournament is one of the largest tournaments in the southeast with over 300 teams ranging from ages 8 to 18. The 12U bracket had 48 teams which were divided into gold, silver, and bronze brackets. After pool play on Friday night and Saturday morning the teams were placed in brackets according to wins and losses.
The Hurricanes won their first pool game and tied their second, which placed them in the silver bracket. Up first in bracket play for the Hurricanes was the Georgia Starzz. The girls won 8 to 2.
After a brief rest the team faced a much larger and second year 12U team in the Georgia Jinx. The Jinx won by a score of 6 to 3 which put the Canes in the loser’s bracket. The next game wouldn’t be until Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. and the girls had to win every game or they would be going home.
First up for the Canes was Synergy Mojo, it was a close game until the end as the Canes pushed across 3 runs late for a 5 to 2 victory. Every game was played back to back so there wasn’t any time for much rest for the girls as they faced the Diamondbacks and won by a score of 4 to 2.
Next up for the Canes were the Fairplay Fillies out of Atlanta. The Fillies were known for their aggressive base running and outstanding defensive play. The Hurricanes came out of the gate swinging hard and making great defensive plays.
The game ended on a fantastic double play turned by the Canes as they won by a score of 6 to 4. This set up a game against the Macon Blast, a team the Hurricanes were all too familiar with. The two teams had faced each other many times over the years and knew how each other played. The Canes got on the board early and were up by a score of 2 to 0. The Blast pushed a run across to make it a one run game. Some great hitting by the Canes pushed across two more runs late in the game. The Blast added two more runs but some great defensive play by the Canes would help them hold on to a 4 to 3 win. With that win the girls were guaranteed a third place finish.
Up next for the Hurricanes was the Georgia Jinx, the only team that had beaten them. The Jinx jumped out to an early lead and the Canes just couldn’t get the big hit they needed as they left the bases loaded twice in the game. The Canes fell to the Jinx by a score of 5 to 0, for third place in the KOM.
The Hurricanes had played a total of 9 games in two days, with five games back to back on Sunday. The weekend was full of fun and great softball. The girls will never forget this experience.
