The Dodge County High School (DCHS) Lady Indians faced the Swainsboro Tigers on Tuesday, October 8, for the best two out of three games for the region championship. Of course, the Lady Indians had to keep it interesting and lost the first game three to one, ensuring fans would enjoy the three game series.
In game one, Elizabeth Massingill pitched with seven strikeouts, one walk and allowed seven hits. Massingill also had the only run batted in (RBI) for the Lady Indians in game one. Annie Moore, Nikki Graham and Lauren Belflower was one for three and Haley Holloway was one for two at the plate.
The Lady Indians played like the fans are accustomed to in game two and came away with a big win of 13 – 0 in five innings. Katie Selph was the win ning pitcher with six strikeouts, one walk and allowed five hits. Moore was two for three with one RBI; Massingill was two for three with one RBI; Margaret Simmons was one for three with three RBIs; Maddie Mullis was one for three; Graham was one for four with one RBI; Lila Coleman was two for four with one RBI; and Selph, Claire Greer and Belflower were all one for three.
After losing the first game the Lady Indians would have to play a third game to earn the region championship. Game three was played on Wednesday, October 9 at the Reservation. With a score of 5 – 0 the Lady Indians won the game and clinched the region championship title.
Senior, Selph did a great job pitching with six strikeouts, no walks and allowed six hits. Greer, also a senior, had a big night defensively and offensively. She was two for two at the plate while batting in the first three runs of the game. She and Simmons also had a double play later in the game when Greer would catch a fly ball deep in center field and throw to Simmons at second to get the lead runner for the Lady Tigers out. Selph was two for three, Belflower was one for two, Simmons was two for three with two RBIs and Mullis was one for two.
The Lady Indians will face Appling County on Wednesday, October 16 and Thursday, October 17 at the Reservation at 4:00 p.m.
