The Dodge County High School (DCHS) Indians began their 2013 season at home this past Friday night at Memorial Stadium against the Southwest High School Patriots of Macon.
The Patriots returned the opening kickoff on a long return to inside the Indians’ 30-yard line but could not keep the momentum going as the Indian defense held them to a no score opportunity.
Dodge County began play with some ball-control issues from a wet playing field resulting in a fumble. But, the Patriots could not capitalize on the turnover.
The Indians then drove the ball down field with a 40-yard pass from quarterback Landon Martin to Roscoe Wilcox setting up a 15-yard touchdown run from Gerard Davis with three minutes left in the first quarter of play. Mitch Tanner would give the Indians a 7 to 0 lead after his successful point after attempt.
Southwest’s next drive resulted in a penalty and quarterback sack as well as a 15-yard penalty. Dodge County got the ball back and quickly erupted downfield for a touchdown. Wilcox scored the 20-yard touchdown run for the Indians and Tanner made the point after attempt. At the end of the first quarter, the Indians lead by a score of 14 to 0.
Southwest struggled again in the second quarter having to punt inside Dodge territory. Dodge County gave up the ball on an interception but Southwest was forced to punt again due to the Indian defensive team. Dodge would fumble yet again giving the Patriots another scoring opportunity in the red zone at the 20-yard line. But, a field goal attempt by Southwest failed, as the field goal was wide right.
Quarterback Clint Thompson in the second half led the Indian offense. Tanner made a 40-yard field goal with less than 20 seconds left in the half. Dodge lead 17 to 0 at halftime.
Dodge County would keep the momentum going during the third quarter scoring 21 points. Marlek Lamb traveled 61-yards on the first snap of the third quarter and Wilcox got the final 5-yard run for a touchdown. Gerard Davis scored on a 10-yard run and Tanner’s point after attempts put the Indians up with a 31 to 0 lead with 10 minutes left in the third quarter of play.
Lamb returned an interception 87 yards for a score but was called back due to a bad block.
At the start of the fourth quarter, Wilcox went 30-yards on the first play for a touchdown.
The point after attempt by Tanner was good.
Southwest never gained momentum as the Indian defense shut them down the entire game. Final score: Indians 38 and Southwest 0.
The Indians had 32 first downs in the game compared to the Patriots 14 and rushed for 578 total yards in the game compared to the Patriots 38 total yards.
The Indians had 120 passing yards and the Patriots 38 passing yards.
Dodge County fumbled the ball four times in the game, had one interception and had six penalties for 55 yards.
The Patriots fumbled the ball once in the game, had one interception and had eight penalties for 70 yards.
The Indians will travel to Dublin this Friday night to play the Fighting Irish in their season opener.
This game is one of the oldest high school rivalries in the middle Georgia area. The game will sure to be intense
