Peter Brown Construction Senior Superintendent Bob Hilburn met with Dodge County Sheriff Lynn Sheffield, Dodge County Interim County Manager Bobby Peacock and Dodge County Jail Administrator Chris Holland on August 7. After discussing all the problems with the roof leaking, Hilburn stated that they would replace the portion of the roof that leaks with a new roof. According to Peacock, materials had to be ordered and work would begin prior to September 1, 2013.
Peacock also told commissioners that an inmate had damaged a sprinkler at the new jail causing flooding in one of the sections. He stated that 69 sprinkler heads were currently being replaced. The cost will be $3,543.65.
The pilot-recycling program is currently underway. Blue dumpsters are being placed at each school, the Dodge County Landfill, in Chester and one behind the Dodge County Courthouse.
Dodge County Historical Society representative Danny Pickett went before the board of commissioner requesting $2,500.00 for the historical society to use for operating expenses for the remainder of the year. The expenses include utilities, upkeep and the mortgage payment. Commissioner Karen Cheek made a motion, seconded by Terry Niblett to approve the request. Motion passed.
Kathy C. Woodham, representing Legacy Woods Subdivision off the Rocky Springs Road went before the commissioners about the road in the subdivision. Woodham stated that a homeowners association was formed approximately four years ago when the Compass Group organized the subdivision. She added that the Bank of Dudley had had to foreclose on the Compass Group and a homeowners association was no longer necessary because no community property is in the subdivision. Woodham told commissioners that the Bank of Dudley had agreed to give the half-mile road to the county. The road is currently gravel overlay road.
Bank of Dudley representative Bill Brown told commissioners that the subdivision contained 20 lots of which 18 were sold and 5 homes were located in the subdivision. He added that the road was in good condition and that the cost was approximately $2,000.00 per year. Commissioner Niblett made the motion, seconded by commissioner Jr. Howell to table the request.
Commissioner Niblett made the recommendation and motion to appoint Katherine Harrington as the alternate representation to the Ocmulgee River Trail Partnership board.
In public participation, Kenneth Williamson from the American Legion informed commissioners the legion commander, Danny Mullis, had been trying to rent the old National Guard Armory. According to Williamson, Mullis has had no luck renting the building and that the City of Eastman, Dodge County or the Emergency Management Association did not want the building. Williamson then told commissioners, they were going to sell the building but at the current time did not know how.
Wendell Oxley went before the commissioner requesting consideration to pave Oxley-Garrett Road.
Jr. Belflower then askedcommissioners what the public meeting on August 28, 2013 was concerning. According to an advertisement on page 4B of this edition of The Dodge County News, a public hearing to consider entering into a 20-year lease with the Heart of Georgia Airport Authority to provide for industrial and/or economic development will be the topic of the meeting.
The next regular meeting of the commissioners is scheduled for Monday, September 2, 2013. Commissioners voted to change the meeting to Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. because of the Labor Day holiday.
