Eastman has been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation. It is the seventeenth year Eastman has received this national recognition.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
To become a Tree City USA, a community must meet four standards: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, an Arbor Day observance.
“The trees we plant and care for today will cool and beautify our cities, increase property values, help clean the air and water, and conserve energy for years to come”, stated Michael Henderson, Chief Ranger of the Georgia Forestry Commission.
“An effective community forestry program is an ongoing process of renewal and improvement – a program of tree planting and care that continues through the years.” Henderson said. “The Tree City USA award is an excellent indication that there is a solid foundation for that process of improvement.”
Eastman celebrated Arbor Day, Friday, February 19, 2010. Dogwood trees were given away by the City of Eastman, the Dodge County Commissioners and Eastman/Dodge County Area Chamber of Commerce. A proclamation was read by Eastman City Manager Bea Edge proclaiming Friday, February 19, 2010 as Arbor Day in Eastman. A large crowd was on hand to help celebrate the event.
