The Dodge County High School Squaws basketball team began their state tournament hosting Peach County on Tuesday, February 19, 2013. Peach County was a one-man team with a freshmen guard averaging 26 points a game.
Coach Smith countered this apparent weakness by putting her best defensive player, Monica Woodard, on her and told her to, “stick to her like glue.”
The other team members remained in a box zone. This defensive strategy held Peach County’s star player to only 14 points.
On the other hand, the Squaws displayed a much more balanced offensive attack with Markesha McCloud leading the way with 20 points; Rachel Selph 18 points; Monica Woodard six points, Keyria Gordon six points, Kristin Hall two points and Jovonna Collins two points.
The final score was 54-50 in favor of the Squaws.
After winning the first round of state, the Squaws headed to the west side of Atlanta to play Chapel Hill in the round of 16.
This was a hotly contested battle as both teams played aggressive, scrappy defense as reflected in low scoring by both teams.
Neither team was able to shoot the ball particularly well, so it came down to ball possession and free throws.
Unfortunately Chapel Hill took the lead mid-way through the fourth quarter and began holding the ball. The Squaws had to resort to fouling and hoping they would miss free throws.
Chapel Hill went on to win this contest by a score of 44-38.
Scoring for the game was M. McCloud 16 points; R. Selph 15 points; J. Collins three points; A. Jones two points and K. Hall two points. The Squaws had a successful year with an overall record of 20-8.
The Dodge County High School Indians basketball team faced off against Henry County in the first round and was victorious by a score of 66-56.
In the round of 16, the Indians played Savannah, of which Savannah came out on top 71-48.
The Indians finish the year with a record of 18-10.
