The Dodge County Squaws and Indians basketball teams traveled to Jeff Davis High on Monday, December 28 and won their opening games of the Jeff Davis Holiday Shootout. The Squaws defeated their opening round opponent, Fitzgerald, 59-40. The Indians also took care of the Purple Hurricanes by a score of 58-40. Both teams were scheduled to play AAAA Wayne County on Tuesday, December 29 and will finish up the round robin tournament with games against the home team, Jeff Davis on Wednesday, December 30 at 7:00 p.m.
The Squaws took a 16-3 opening quarter lead over the Lady Canes on Monday. Nisha Walker led with nine points in the quarter. The Lady Canes came back to pull within three at 20-23 at the half against the Squaw substitutes in the second quarter. Dodge took a big lead back in the third quarter by outscoring Fitzgerald 18-5. Walker led with six points in the quarter. Tahitia Butler had five. Yaleisa Burns led Dodge with six points in the final quarter as the Squaws won 59-40. Final scoring for the Squaws was: Nisha Walker, 24 points; Yaleisa Burns, 12 points; Tahitia Butler, six points; Kadayasha Jones, six points; Staci Ross, five points; Kadejah Carson, four points; Kemiya Harrell, two points.
The Indians led 15-12 after one quarter against Fitzgerald. Rusty Selph and Justice Burch led Dodge with four points each in the quarter. The Indians extended their lead to 29-20 after two quarters. Leonard Floyd and Austin Smith each had five points in the second to lead Dodge. The Indians held a 37-23 lead after three quarters. Cyprin Burse led the Indians with six points in the final quarter followed by Selph with five as Dodge extended their lead to 58-40 for the win. Final scoring for the Indians was: Leonard Floyd, 10 points; Cyprin Burse, nine points; Rusty Selph, nine points; Greg Butler, eight points; Justice Burch, four points; Eric Bruemmer, two points; Tamius Lemon, two points; Jordan Jones, two points; Curtis Rushing, two points; Marcus Brown, two points.
