Will Morgan, 120 pounds, conquered a new milestone in the young history of Dodge County Wrestling. He became the first high school wrestler to win a gold medal at an invitational tournament. Battling against 16 others teams, Morgan’s impressive preliminary bouts earned him a 4-1 record and a shot at the medal rounds.
Earning a third seed, Morgan first had to face off against the wrestler from Irwin County who defeated him earlier in the tournament. Looking for some old fashion revenge, Morgan quickly gained the upper hand with an early takedown. Seconds later, he turned his opponent to his back recording additional points.
By the time the third period ended, Morgan was up 8-0 against the kid who pinned him previously, earning a shot at the championship against a seasoned wrestler from Burke County.
In the championship match, Morgan wasted little time attacking the unsuspecting wrestler from Burke. A lighting fast takedown and slick tilt put Morgan up 5-0 going into the second period.
During the second period, both wrestlers traded points in an impressive display of wrestling skill and agility. Entering the third period, Morgan was still commanding a slight lead.
Trading point for point in a very tense battle, Morgan held on to win by a score of 15-12 earning the gold medal in the 120-pound bracket at the Viking Invitational hosted by Treutlen County High School.
