In an interesting interview with Newsbusters.org (a great site) MSNBC morning host and former Congressman Joe Scarborough says Newt Gingrich fought against him in the 1994 Republican Primary, claiming Joe was too conservative and couldn’t win in November. Newt figured it wrong - Joe won the primary and took 62 percent of the vote in the November general election, his first try for public office. He became the first Republican to represent that part of Florida (Pensacola area) since 1872.
After Newt supported the “moderate”in the primary, who lost to Joe Scarborough and became Speaker in the Republican takeover, Scarborough says he went to Washington and continued to battle Gingrich through ‘95, ‘96 and ‘97 “until people like Steve Largent and Mark Sanford and Matt Salmon and myself eventually got him out of town.” I doubt you will see Newt on Joe’s morning show.
The Republican presidential candidates running generally aren’t very impressive. The better candidates declined to run: Sarah Palin, Jim DeMint, John Thune, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul. Yes, Sarah Palin would be a good candidate, hated by the medialeft, but what’s wrong with that? If you want a “Republican” adored by the media, vote for Colin Powell. Sarah Palin and Ronald Reagan are two of the most hated Republicans (by the media).
As Robert Ringer (RobertRinger.com) says “Republicans feel much more comfortable with names like Dole, Bush (1 & 2), and McCain.” I would add to the “most comfortable” list another loser : Gerald Ford, so bad he lost to Jimmy Carter.
“Since Wendell Willkie in 1940 every moderate-to-liberal Republican has claimed to be more ‘electable’ than his conservative rivals.”

See, I told you Newt was going to catch fire in the presidential race, didn’t I? Actually, I’m lying - I laughed when he got into the race and figured he’d be running behind Jon Huntsman. This shows you - I don’t know anything either.
“Democrats will attract about 35% of the voters without any regard to their proven inability to manage a government or to resurrect an economy.”

Yes, diehard members of the government dependency crowd provide a floor of 35 percent or more of the vote. They will stick with the party of the “free” goodies through thin and thin. I’ve heard estimates of this as high as 43 percent, the same percentage Bill Clinton took in 1992 with a big assist from his pal Ross Perot. Another admission - I thought the Democrats would throw the corrupt Clinton overboard when he came up for reelection in 1996.
Winter Park, Florida, near Orlando, has four different congressional districts. Columnist Scott Maxwell points out incumbents have successfully rigged the districts to insure their reelection. This is amazing:
“In 2004, after the last time the Florida Legislature drew new lines, not a single legislative or congressional incumbent in the entire state lost a bid for re-election.”
Scott Maxwell in The Orlando Sentinel,
known locally as the Slantinel
Of course, many Florida incumbents lost in 2010. The situation changes quickly. Before the Internet, I used to buy the Sentinel when in Central Florida just to read libertarian Charley Reese’s columns. Several years back the paper dumped (native Georgian) Charley, a gutsy writer.

James Madison, Father of the U.S. Constitution, said in 1794 that he couldn’t find anything in it that supported the notion of benevolence. Wouldn’t he be surprised at foreign aid.
When you see a litigant on the Judge Joe Brown television show described as an “unemployed ex-stripper” you sort of figure she’s on her way to losing the case.

Remember $1.79 gasoline? That was the average price when Obama took office.
