The Dodge County Indians (4-5) traveled to Sylvania this past Friday night to play the Screven County Gamecocks (2-7) for the final game of the 2011 season.
Screven County received the opening kickoff and began play from the 10-yard line. The Gamecocks advanced the ball four consecutive first downs to the 46-yard line.
The Dodge County defensive line forced a punt on fourth down.
The Indians’ first possession of the first quarter started on the 20-yard line. D’Eric McNair (#11) handed off to Marcus Brown (#3) and Brown ran the ball 70-yards to Screven’s 10-yard line. On second and goal, Brown ran into the end zone scoring the first touchdown of the game. Walt Turner (#86) kicked the point after attempt and the Indians led with a score of Dodge 7 and Screven 0.
Screven tried to gain some momentum as the Gamecocks moved the ball downfield from their 10-yard line to the 48-yard line of Dodge. The Indian defense forced a punt and Dodge County took over on their 10-yard line. The play ended the first quarter.
Dodge County started the second quarter of play from their 10-yard line. A series of first downs moved the ball into Screven territory to the 28-yard line. McNair ran the ball into the end zone for a touchdown. Turner’s point after attempt was good and the Indians advanced their lead to Dodge 14 and Screven 0 with four minutes of play left in the first half.
Screven and Dodge exchanged the ball several times as the clock was winding down for halftime. The Gamecocks had the ball on the 46-yard line of Dodge with 45 seconds of play left in the first half. Screven County surprised Dodge with a reverse action play and pass and the Gamecocks scored a touchdown. The point after attempt was good and at halftime the score was Dodge 14 and Screven 7.
Dodge received the ball at the start of the third quarter and began play from their 46-yard line. The Indians quickly moved the ball down to the 10-yard line. On third down and goal, Brown ran the ball into the end zone for a touchdown. Turner’s point after attempt failed and the Indians led with a score of Dodge 20 and Screven 7.
Screven County did not get a drive going from their 20-yard line. On third and fourteen, the Screven quarterback threw a long pass and it was intercepted by Dodge County Indian Dana Northcutt (#2) on the 46-yard line of Screven. The Indians marched downfield for a touchdown. Turner’s point after attempt was good and at the end of the third quarter, Dodge lead by a score of 27 to 7.
Fourth quarter play action was dominated by a long drive by the Gamecocks. Screven County scored their final points of the ballgame with a touchdown and a two-point conversion. The Gamecocks trailed the Indians 27 to 15 with less than four minutes of play in the ballgame.
The Indians got the ball back and kept the ball on the ground as time ran out in the ball game.
Final score was Dodge County 27 and Screven County 15.
The Dodge County Indians ended their season with a 5-5 record and placed fifth in the 3AA region with a 4-4-region record behind Dublin, Laney, Jefferson County and Bleckley County.
