The Dodge County Indians hosted the East Laurens Falcons on Friday, November 6 in their final game of the 2009 season. The Indians defeated the Falcons 35-32 to finish the season 5-5.
The Indians received the opening kickoff at their 31-yard line and moved the ball to the 44 on runs by Devon Simmons and Laquan Hogue before the Indians fumbled and it was recovered by East Laurens at the Dodge 45. The Falcons moved the ball to the eight-yard line on eight plays and were forced to kick a field goal on fourth and six with 6:05 left in the first to take a 0-3 lead.
The Indians received the kickoff at their 22. Indian quarter back Shawn Honeycutt then hit Hogue for 77-yard touchdown on the next play as the Indians took the lead 7-3 after Cole Evans’ point after kick with 5:46 left in the first.
The Dodge defense forced the Falcons to punt on their next possession and the Indians took over at their own 45. Running by Michael Knight, Hogue and Simmons and a couple of passes to Rhett Honeycutt and Curtis Rushing moved Dodge for another touchdown as Simmons scored on a nine-yard run at the 11:55 mark of the second quarter. The Indians lead 14-3 after Evans’ point after touchdown (PAT) was good.
East Laurens scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 14-17 lead at the half. The Falcons scored on a one yard run with 5:19 left and on a 42-yard interception return with 48.8 left.
The Falcons took the opening kickoff of the third quarter but were forced to punt. Dodge then took over at their 23. Running by Simmons and Hogue moved Dodge to the three-yard line and a penalty on the Falcons moved to the one and Hogue scored on a one-yard run from there to take the lead back for the Indians at 20-17 after the PAT was no good at the 6:31 mark of the third.
After another Falcon punt, Dodge started another drive at their 23 and moved the ball to the Falcon seven-yard line on running by Simmons and Hogue before Hogue scored his second touchdown with 2:13 left in the third. Dodge led 27-17 after Evans’ PAT was good.
East Laurens opened the fourth quarter by scoring on a 29-yard pass to cut into the Indian lead at 27-23 with 11:01 to go. The Falcons then recovered an onside kick at the Dodge 43 and two plays later scored on a 47-yard pass to take the lead back at 27-29 with 10:23 left in the game. The Falcon PAT was blocked by Hogue to keep it a two point game.
The Indians were forced to punt on their next possession. East Laurens then moved the ball to the Dodge nine-yard line in eight plays but the Dodge defense held tough and forced the Falcons to attempt 26-yard field goal and it was good. The Falcons led 27-32 with 4:21 left in the game.
Indian Leonard Floyd made a huge 39-yard kickoff return to the East Laurens 31 on the ensuing kickoff. From there Simmons had a long run to the nine-yard line. On three consecutive plays, Hogue ran the ball for three yards each to finally score on a three-yard run with 2:23 left in the game. Hogue ran the ball on a two-point conversion and took the lead back at 35-32.
East Laurens returned the kickoff to their 46-yard line but could not connect on four consecutive passes and the Indians took over on downs at the Falcon 41 with 1:33 left in the game. Three plays later the Indians had to punt the ball back to the Falcons with 30 seconds left but again the Falcons failed to complete a pass and time ran out. Dodge County took the victory 35-32.
The Indians had 15 first downs and 336 yards of total offense with 233 rushing and 103 passing. Offensive leaders for Dodge were: Devon Simmons had 141 yards rushing on 21 attempts and one touchdown; Laquan Hogue rushed for 91 yards on 14 attempts and three touchdowns and also had 77 yards receiving on one reception for a touchdown; Shawn Honeycutt completed three passes for 103 yards and one touchdown; Rhett Honeycutt caught one pass for 18 yards; Curtis Rushing caught one pass for eight yards.
Defensive leaders for the Indians were: Herschel Anderson had eight and a half tackles with nine assists with one quarterback sack; Laquan Hogue had eight and a half tackles with five assists; Tucker Stonecypher had five and a half tackles with five assists; Julios McCoy had five and half tackles with three assists; Marques Gordon had five tackles with six assists; Derome Clark had two and half tackles with three assists; Leonard Floyd had two and a half tackles with three assists; Michael Austin had two and a half tackles with three assists.
Some final seasons stats for the Indians were: Cyprin Burse had 1121 yards rushing on 218 attempts and 13 touchdowns; Laquan Hogue had 345 yards rushing on 56 attempts and five touchdowns; Devon Simmons had 279 on 62 attempts and three touchdowns; Shawn Honeycutt completed 52 passes for 797 yards and six touchdowns; Hogue caught 19 passes for 323 yards and three touchdowns; Leonard Floyd caught 12 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns; Curtis Rushing caught five passes for 93 yards; Tucker Stonecypher caught five passes for 61 yards; Rhett Honeycutt caught four passes for 60 yards; Devon Moorehead caught three passes for 23 yards; Cole Evans made two of three field goals with his longest of 42 yards and he also made good on 18 of 23 extra point kicks; Walt Turner made good on five of six extra points kicks.
On the defensive side of the ball season totals were: Laquan Hogue had 58 tackles; Herschel Anderson had 50 tackles; Leonard Floyd had 42.5 tackles; Cyprin Burse had 37 tackles; Derome Clark had 33.5 tackles; Tucker Stonecypher had 26.5 tackles; Kyree Davidson had 23 tackles; Marques Gordon had 19.5 tackles; Michael Knight had 17.5 tackles; Julios McCoy had 17 tackles; Devon Moorehead had 16 tackles; Michael Austin had 14 tackles; Denzel Sanford had 12 tackles.
The following seniors have given four years of hard work to the Indian football team: Herschel Anderson, Cyprin Burse, Derome Clark, Laquan Hogue, Shawn Honeycutt, Semaj Ivey, Tevin Johnson, Michael Knight, Devon Moorehead, and Jerry “Bull” White.
