The Dodge County High Lady Indians opened their defense of their region championship on the road this past week as they battled Bleckley County and Dublin.
On Tuesday night, Dodge battled Bleckley in a re-match of last year’s region championship series. Dodge would lead most of the way 1-0, but the Lady Royals would battle back and win 5-4 in extra innings. On Thursday, the Lady Indians would travel to Dublin to play the Lady Irish. Dodge would score four runs in the first and never look back for an 11-0 win. The game was really nowhere near close as the score.
On Tuesday night, Dodge got things going early in the game. With one cut, Clair Greer reached on an error and Ashton Holt singled to put Dodge in business. Katie Selph would get a big hit with two outs that would score Greer and Dodge would take a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Royals would tie the game at 1-1 in the third and they strung three hits and a walk into the tying run. The game would then become a defensive battle as both team’s bats went quiet. Holt was strong in the fourth and fifth and the Dodge offense would only have two hits in the third through the fifth innings.
The Lady Royals would claim their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth. They put together a pair of hits, a walk, and a sacrifice fly giving the Lady Royals a 2-1 lead going into the seventh. Dodge would send the top of the order to the plate in the seventh. Jaye Hillard would lay down a bunt to put Hillard at second with the tying run. Holt would get pitched around and walked on four pitches.
The game would come down to Selph with runners at second and third with two outs. Selph would ground to third, but the throw would be bad and both runs scored and Dodge would claim a 3-2 lead. Nikki Graham would then single in Selph and Dodge would take a 4-2 lead going to the bottom of the seventh. Holt would get a strikeout against the lead off better in the seventh. A hit latemen and a double would put runners at second and third with two outs. A pop up appeared to be the final out, but the ball would not be caught and both runners would score and the game would be 4-4.
The Lady Royals would push across the winning run in the bottom of the eighth for a 5-4 win.
On Thursday, Dodge continues region play on the road in Dublin against the Lady Irish. Hilliard would lead the game with a bunt single and a stolen base. Clair Greer would sacrifice her to the third. Holt’s sacrifice fly would gibe Dodge a 1-0 lead. The Dublin pitcher would then get real wild. Catlin Greer, Selph, Graham, and Ashley Roland would all draw walks. Roland would give her a RBI and Dodge would take a 2-0 lead. Hannah Moore would then add a single good for two more runs and a 4-0 lead after the top of the first.
The Lady Irish would have no answer for Ashton Holt. The senior pitcher struck out the side and Dodge kept their 4-0 lead. Hillard would lead off the second the same way she did the first with a lead off bunt single. This time she would steal second and third.
Clair Greer would double her home for a 5-0 lead. Three batters later, Katie Greer would double Greer and Holt who walked for a 7-0 lead. The Lady Irish still had absolutely no answers for Holt in the second. The senior would once again strike out the side and Dodge would lead 7-0 going into the third.
Holt was through for the day as she had one walk and six strikeouts in the two innings.
Dodge would continue the hitting in the fourth. Lila Coleman would lead off with a single. Catlin Greer would follow with a single two batters later. Selph would then double in Coleman for an 8-0 lead. Selph was 3 for 3 in the game with a pair of doubles and 3 RBI’s. Graham would drive in Greer and Selph and the Dodge lead would be 10-0. The final would be 11-0. Holt and Selph would continue for one hit (an infield hit) and 11 strikeouts over the five-inning game.
Dodge will return home this Thursday for a big rematch with Bleckley County. Game time is 5:55 at the Dodge County high School field.
