The Dodge County Grappling Indians recently traveled to Morgan County to compete in the 1-AAA Area Traditional Championships. The Grappling Indians took nine wrestlers to the tournament and four placed in the top four earning a slot at the Eastern Sectional Tournament.
At 145 pounds, Jacob Danforth ran through his preliminary bouts with ease pinning every opponent. In the championship finals, Danforth faced off with a very tough competitor and scored a close decision on points to earn first place honors. Danforth became our second wrestler to win an Area Championship since 2007.
Also earning a place on the podium were Jerald Gay, 220 pounds, placing third. Tyler
Gruben, 195 pounds, placed fourth and Freshman Clayton Scarborough, 106 pounds, placed fourth. Also competing for the Grappling Indians were Paul Herman, 120 pounds; Tyler McDonald, 132 pounds; JT Shields, 138 pounds; John Burrows, 170 pounds; and Aaron Spires, 285 pounds.
While the high school team was battling it out at the area tournament, the youth club and middle school team competed at the Fitzgerald Hurricane Classic. In the morning Noah Haight brought home a first and second place medal and the Outstanding Wrestler Award. Kaden White had a great day and took second.
