Two Dodge State Prison correctional officers were arrested Sunday at the prison in Chester. Dodge County sheriff’s deputies were called to the prison to transport the correctional officers to the Dodge County jail. The correctional officers were booked into the Dodge County jail and transferred to another undisclosed jail facility due to the current Dodge County jail not being able to segregate inmates for safety.
Correctional officer Jonathan Bernum Payne, Sr. (age 21), of Cochran, is accused by the Georgia Department of Corrections (DOC) of smuggling marijuana, cocaine and cell phones into the prison. Copies of the arrest warrant state that Payne attempted to smuggle over four (4) ounces of marijuana and nearly eight (8) grams of cocaine into the prison along with cell phones. Payne has been charged with possessing and delivering drugs to inmates, use of a telecommunications device to distribute drugs, conspiracy to commit a crime, and violation of his oath of office.
