It’s every man for himself
When they make the movie about the Costa Concordia, the cruise ship that grounded off the coast of Tuscany, there won’t be romantic tales about its captain. Italian authorities immediately arrested him on suspicions of manslaughter and abandoning ship prematurely. He might have been the skipper of the ill-fated vessel in all senses of the word.

I’ll put South Dakota’s colorful Republican former governor and Congressman Bill Janklow, one of my favorite politicians, up against any politician for brash conduct, brains, ability and effectiveness. He knew how government worked and how it could be harnessed in a beneficial way, which should be the main function of any officeholder. He served four years as state attorney general, eight as governor, sat out four years because of term limits, came back for four more years as governor, was reelected again for a fourth term, was term-limited out again, then ran for and won South Dakota’s only House seat. He won easily every time. Known to many as Wild Bill, his 22- year career ended tragically when he ran a stop sign on a rural South Dakota road and hit and killed a motorcyclist, which he never got over, and was convicted of vehicular homicide in 2003. It haunted him to the end, of course. His main flaw was always being in a hurry. He was one who should have always let someone else drive.

Dear editor,
I have been attending several meetings of the Dodge County Board of Commissioners and attended a recent meeting of the Eastman-Dodge County Development Authority. While I do write articles and report on the business affairs of our city and county for The Dodge County News, I am writing on a specific issue that seems to be the focus of our board of commissioners and the issue always seems to be the dumpsters on the Airport Road. This issue affects my neighborhood. [Full Story »]

Dear editor,
We have come, yes, we have come from the poor housing condition, where we had to put pails down to catch the water when it rained. With one fireplace for the whole house, but plenty of ventilation. From the outdoor toilet with the Sears and Roebuck catalog, the corncob and grass for paper we have today. From the wash pan or basin and the number three tubs to take a bath, yes we have come. From the oil light lamps for light to electricity we have today for light and heat. Heaters and air conditioners, yes we have come. From the rub board and the old black wash pot to keep our clothes clean. Don’t forget the old potash soap the old people made to have detergent to wash with, to the Laundromat that we have today. Children of today do not know how to wash. Yes we have come from walking to school and church in all kind of weather to riding today. From the men plowing mules to the tractors and other machines we have today. Yes we have come where most of the Negroes have stopped farming. [Full Story »]

The unsatisfying Romney
Mitt Romney has one advantage over his rivals above all others: He is running a presidential campaign. None of his competitors has been able to manage it in quite the same way.

Writer James Delingpole on Telegraph.co.uk notices similarities between British Prime Minister Tony Blair and U.S. President Barack Obama. James is not a fan of either. Among other similarities he finds these:
“And both do (or did) the things dodgy political leaders always do when the going gets tough at home and their domestic audience finally wises up to how totally useless they are: they hop on the plane and pose as international statesmen instead.”

Dear editor,
Too much versus not enough.
The citizens of this nation/community are constantly being bombarded by many yes’s and no’s. Some are looking at the way things are and asking why, while others are looking at the way they never were and asking why not. One of the reasons for the uprising is that so few have so much and so many have so little. We can have everything in life we want if our Savior chooses to bless us with it. Jesus Christ, who is our Lord and Savior, will always have the last say so. After all, He is the one who knows the end from the beginning. When was the last time you asked Jesus, “Lord, whatever you are doing in this season please don’t do it without me?” Have you ever said, “Lord, whatever I start out to do each day, together you and I can accomplish it.” [Full Story »]

Thatcher vs. decline
Margaret Thatcher is on the cover of Newsweek, or -- the next best thing -- Meryl Streep is on the cover as the former British prime minister in a new biopic.
Thatcher is a rich theme. If the types who expound on such things didn’t so hate her politics, she’d launch a thousand dissertations on those inexhaustible academic themes of class and gender. As the daughter of a grocer, she was looked down upon as the personification of, in the words of one highfalutin critic, “the worst of the lower-middle-class.” As a woman in a man’s world, she was venomously attacked by her opponents as a “bitch” or “the bag.” [Full Story »]

Retiring U.S. Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska, hyped as a “conservative” Democrat, only voted conservative 47.01 percent of the time for his ten-plus year career. Compare this to Nebraska’s other Senator, Republican Mike Johanns, who scored 87.50 percent conservative by the American Conservative Union (conservative.org). Never believe the media’s description of conservative.
