Bank robbers sentenced to lengthy prison terms

Noel Arnold (age 35), Jimmy Lee McBride (age 25), and Brittany Riner (age 25), all from Blackshear, were sentenced to lengthy prison terms July 20 in federal district court in Dublin for the armed bank robbery of the Citizens Bank & Trust (CB&T) that occurred in Chauncey on September 2, 2010. That CB&T branch is now closed due to security concerns following the robbery. [Full Story »]

Dodge schools do not meet Adequate Yearly Progress

For the first time, no school in the Dodge County School System met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), according to results released from the Georgia Department of Education on Thursday, July 21, 2011. Dodge County High School, Dodge County Middle School and North Dodge Elementary School did not meet AYP and South Dodge Elementary was classified as “Needs Improvement” (NI).
AYP is a formula used to determine if schools are meeting expectations under the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). It is a measure of year-to-year student achievement on statewide assessments. [Full Story »]

Brenton Lee Purvis (age 21), of Eastman, was injured when the 1986 Chevrolet Camaro he was driving left the roadway and struck a tree. According to the Georgia State Patrol, Purvis was driving south on Bell Line Road at approximately 6:55 a.m. on Satruday, July 23 when he stated he fell asleep at the wheel. The Camaro ran off across the northbound lane, ran into the ditch, went up an embankment, struck a tree and caught fire. (Photo by Derl Maxwell)
