The Dodge County Indians baseball team finished off the regular season last week with four games. The Indians lost the first game to Bleckley County, but finished the week with three wins. The Indians have a 17-6 record, the best since 2007.
The Indians began the week with a trip to Bleckley County on Tuesday, April 19. The last time the Indians were in Cochran they suffered a 14-5 loss. This time, the Indians hoped to fare better against their Region 3B-AA rivals.
Aron Chick began the day on the pitcher’s mound and in the bottom of the second inning helped himself by getting a solo home run to boost the Indians to a 3-0 lead. The Indians later lost the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Chick gave up four runs for a 4-3 lead by Bleckley County. The Indians retook the lead with four more runs in the fourth inning to go up by a score of 7-4. Chick added another solo homer in that inning, as well. In the top of the fifth inning, the Indians pushed one more run across for an 8-4 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Chick gave way to Jordan Smith who quickly set down the Royals 1-2-3 in a strong pitching performance by the Indians’ everyday catcher. Smith came back out in the bottom of the seventh with the four run lead still intact and attempting to put away the Royals as easily as he had in his first inning of work. The leadoff batter hit a double to start the inning and the unraveling began. Three hit batters and a couple of singles made the score 8-7. Sandwiched in between was the infield play of the season as Chip Miller, playing first base, made a spectacular over-the-shoulder basket catch of a popup in shallow right field with his back to the infield. But with two runners on base, however, a three run walk-off homer ended the game and sent the Indians home in defeat. The Indians still retained the sub-region title, but that was only a consolation prize.
On Thursday, April 21, the Telfair County Trojans came to Eastman for the final regular season game of the year, Senior Night. The Trojans were facing left-hander Devin Northcutt for the first time. Northcutt made short work of the first three Trojan batters by recording the first three outs on only nine pitches.
