Softball tryouts scheduled at middle school

Dodge County Middle School softball tryouts for upcoming sixth, seventh and eighth graders will be held August 2-4, 2010 from 6:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Dodge County Recreation Department field number three.

All players are reminded to bring their completed permission form and physical form.

All players should also make sure they have transportation to and from the recreation department and be on time.

Please wear proper clothing and bring a glove.

All try-outs and practices will be closed to spectators.

Soccer sign ups are being held

The Eastman-Dodge Recreation Department will hold soccer sign-ups from July 19, 2010 through August 6, 2010.

This is for ages five years old to 15 years old.

Sign up times are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

As the long, hot summer continues, the American Red Cross encourages people to stay informed on how to endure the heat and remain safe during what can be dangerous conditions.

Record-breaking temperatures have kept much of the South in excessive heat that can put many at risk.

What to do when the temperatures are on the rise:

• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids and avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.

Registration underway for Bobberthon

If you have not already registered for the Bobberthon, set to end September 11th, the fish are tagged and waiting on anglers.

You can register at any of the following sponsored locations: Boys and Girls Club of Dodge County, Butcher Block, Charlton’s Place, Citizens Bank and Trust, Clay’s Automotive, Coleman Gifts and Framing, Colony Bank, chamber of commerce, Fat Boys Camo, Martha Sheldon Florist and Wholesale Builder’s Supply.

The grand prize is a 14-foot Triton aluminum boat with trailer.

Election results for the July 20, 2010 General Primary Election in Dodge County are complete.

Out of 10,771 registered voters in Dodge County, only 2,770, or 25.72 percent, cast ballots.

Of the 2,770 votes, 1606 were cast as Democrats and 1164 were cast as Republicans in Dodge County.

Deputies deal with alcohol related calls

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office reports a significant increase in alcohol abuse related calls and arrests over the last two weeks.

Dodge County deputies have responded to multiple fights and domestic arguments in which one or all of the persons involved were intoxicated.

On July 17, Dodge County deputies responded to a fight at McCranie’s Boat Landing south of Rhine involving several people.

One person, a 31 year old male, refused medical treatment at the scene but showed up later at Dodge County Hospital complaining of head injuries. [Full Story »] 

Vehicles collide

A car and an 18-wheeler collided at the intersection of Griffin Street and Legion Drive when the driver of the car apparently pulled into the path of the truck.

According to the police report, Lile Low (76), of Eastman, was driving his 1995 Ford Crown Victoria east on Griffin Street when he attempted to turn left onto Legion Drive, pulling into the path of Matthew Steven Johnson (29), of Eastman, who was driving a 2000 Peterbuilt tractor-trailer west on Griffin Street.

The accident happened at approximately 9:38 a.m. on Friday, July 23.

Two named to All-Middle Georgia GHSA baseball team

Two Dodge County High School Indian baseball players have been named to the All-Middle Georgia Georgia High School Association (GHSA) baseball team.

Junior Clint Taylor was named to the All-Middle Georgia GHSA baseball team first team as a pitcher.

During the 2009-2010 season Taylor went 6-2 with a 1.4 earned run average. He struck out 96 in 60 innings and had three saves.

Taylor was also named to the Region 3-AA All Region first team and was voted Region 3-AA pitcher of the year. [Full Story »]
