This letter is in response to the letter that John Smith submitted to The Dodge County News January 13, 2010. I felt that I needed to clarify the terminology he utilized in his letter.
In medicine, an adverse effect is a harmful and undesired effect resulting from a medication or other intervention such as surgery. An adverse effect may be termed a “side effect;” when judged to be secondary to a main or therapeutic effect. Using a drug or other medical intervention which is contra indicated may increase the risk of adverse effects. An example would be a person taking a cough suppressive with codeine additive. The cough medication would help the cough, but the codeine may make the person nauseated. Therefore, one must weigh the side effect of the nausea versus the benefit of the decreased cough.
