The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation has released its 2010 list of 10 Places in Peril in the state.
Sites on the list include: Central State Hospital in Milledgeville; Paradise Gardens in Summerville; Morris Brown College in Atlanta; Canton Grammar School in Cherokee County; Leake archaeological site in Cartersville; Dorchester Academy in Midway; Old Dodge County Jail in Eastman; Ritz Theatre in Thomaston; Herndon Plaza in Atlanta; and, Capricorn Recording Studio in Macon.
“This is the Trust’s fifth annual Places in Peril list,” said Mark C. McDonald, president and CEO of the Trust. “We hope the list will continue to draw attention to a broad range of Georgia’s imperiled historic resources by highlighting ten representative sites,” McDonald said. [Full Story »]

Someone called it right about a year ago in Liberty magazine. I don’t remember who said it but a writer observed that Obama is against the Iraq war but supports other wars like Iraq.

A Little Common Sense

On Nov. 3, the fairy tale died. The election results in Virginia and New Jersey dismantled the self-satisfied, just-so story that Democrats have been telling themselves about last year’s election.
The story goes like this: In 2008, Americans voted for change not just in the nation’s leadership, but in its fundamental political orientation. They wanted a shift to the left not seen since 1932. The nation’s political map had been utterly transformed. Barack Obama owned the suburbs and independents, and laid claim to formerly secure Republican states. The tyrants that are running our country now have another surprise in store for us, the taxpayer. The chief tyrant, Mr. Obama, has plans to go to Denmark later this year to attend a conference on global warming. At this conference he has already said that he will sign the treaty that has the United States paying the rest of the world for the damage that we have done to the planet. As the leaves fall and we prepare our homes for Thanksgiving and the upcoming holiday season, you may not be aware that there are several thousand citizens whose only home is one of Georgia’s seven regional mental health hospitals. Many of these patients have lived in the hospitals for decades and have little, if any, support from friends or family. [Full Story »]

Well, I’ve certainly ruffled some feathers by saying American health care’s third-party payment system suffers from Soviet-style inefficiencies. “Soviet-style,” now that’s cussing by American standards.
I chose the controversial reference to find common ground among Washington partisans embroiled in the health care debate. It’s worked with a few representatives, just not enough. And it has also put me in a position where, as dad used to say, I’ve got some explaining to do. That’s good. If more people understand our third-party payment system disaster, maybe we’ll do something about it.
All Americans would like to improve health care access and cost without harming quality. I certainly would. I’d like to strengthen Medicare and Medicaid and increase the number of insured Americans. “Isn’t bearing added cost worth it?” reform proponents ask rhetorically. “Not with my tax dollars,” opponents reply, often adding “And don’t make my health care costs more expensive.
