The Rex Hodges era began on a winning note last Friday night as Dodge County defeated Irwin County 16-6 in a scrimmage game held at Memorial Stadium.
Coach Hodges said that there was good and bad points on both sides of the ball. “On defense,” coach Hodges states, “our tackling wasn’t as good but will get better and we need to get better getting on loose balls. We didn’t control the line of scrimmage on offense and we lost four turnovers on our side of the field and we must improve on that.”
Coach Hodges went on to say “our special teams were good all night and we took advantage of some of Irwin’s breakdowns”.
“Walt Turner did a good job kicking for us all night,” Coach Hodges added. It was a kickoff that started Irwin deep in their territory in the third quarter that led to a safety for Dodge County.
Dodge got on the board first as quarterback D’Eric McNair scored on a keeper for a 7-0 lead at the half. “We did a good job of getting on them in the first five minutes of the second half,” said Coach Hodges.
Curtis Rushing took a short pass from McNair and raced 60 yards for the touchdown. Dana Northcutt threw a key block that helped Rushing score.
The defense was led by Marcus Brown having eight tackles and six assists and Leonard Floyd had four tackles, three assists, and a fumble recovery.
This year’s region play will be strong once again. Dublin brings back a bunch of people this season, according to Hodges. Jefferson County, Swainsboro and Laney should be strong as well.
Dodge County will have their season opener on August 26, 2011 at Appling County. The home opener will be September 2 as they host Toombs County.
