The Dodge County Indians hosted the Vidalia Indians on Friday, October 23 for their homecoming game. Dodge County and Vidalia both came into the game with identical 4-3 records with the winner of this game improving their chances at a state playoff spot.
Dodge County received the opening kickoff and returned to their 33-yard line. On their first play from scrimmage, Cyprin Burse broke for a 67-yard touchdown run to take the early lead 7-0 after Cole Evans’ point after kick was good. The Dodge defense held tough as they forced Vidalia to punt from their own 12-yard line on a drive that began at their 19. Burse fumbled the ball on the punt reception and Vidalia recovered at their 37. One play later, Vidalia gave the ball right back to Dodge as they fumbled and Dodge recovered at the Vidalia 43 but was unable to score.
With 2:50 left in the first quarter, Vidalia got on the scoreboard with a 53-yard touchdown run and the game was tied 7-7. Dodge started another drive in Vidalia territory but could not move the ball and Vidalia intercepted a pass at their 21. Three plays later Vidalia scored to go ahead on a 42-yard run with 55.1 left in the quarter. They missed the extra point kick and the score was 13-7 Vidalia.
On Dodge’s first possession of the second quarter, Shawn Honeycutt hit Laquan Hogue with a pass for a 68-yard touchdown and Dodge took the lead back 14-13 after Evans’ point after touchdown (PAT) was good. Vidalia scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 28-14 lead with 4:02 left in the second quarter.
Dodge County went on a long 12 play drive to end the second quarter and scored on Cole Evans’ 24 yard field goal to make the score 28-17 at the half.
Both teams scored two touchdowns in the third quarter. Vidalia scored at the 8:49 mark of the third to take a 35-17 lead. Dodge County came back with a score at the 5:50 mark on a one-yard run by Burse. Evans’ point after kick was blocked and Dodge still trailed 35-23. Vidalia scored on their next play from scrimmage and then led 41-23 with 5:33 left in the third. Shawn Honeycutt hit Leonard Floyd with a pass for a 60-yard touchdown on their next possession and the score was 42-29 after Evans’ point after kick was blocked again.
Vidalia scored another touchdown to begin the fourth quarter and took a 49-29 lead over Dodge. Dodge took the ball on their next possession and went on a 12 play scoring drive. Honeycutt made his third touchdown pass of the night as he hit Leonard Floyd for a 10-yard touchdown to cut the score to 49-36 after Evans’ point after kick was good.
Dodge attempted to move the ball for another score but could not convert on a fourth down with 2:12 left in the game and Vidalia took over on downs and ran the clock out. The final score was Vidalia 48 and Dodge 36.
Dodge had 426 yards of total offense in the game with 141 rushing yards and 285 passing yards. Vidalia had 423 yards of offense with 389 on the ground and 34 on the ground. Dodge was led on offense by Shawn Honeycutt who completed 14 of 27 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns. Cyprin Burse ran for 124 yards on 21 attempts and scored two touchdowns. Laquan Hogue caught four passes for 133 yards and one touchdown. Leonard Floyd caught three passes for 99 yards and two touchdowns. Rhett Honeycutt caught three passes for 42 yards.
Defensive leaders for Dodge were: Laquan Hogue had seven and a half tackles and seven assists; Cyprin Burse had five and a half tackles and five assists; Leonard Floyd had four tackles and four assists; Derome Clark had three and half tackles and five assists; Kyree Davidson had three and a half tackles and seven assists; Julious McCoy had three tackles and four assists; Latrenton Williams had two and a half tackles and three assists; Michael Knight had two tackles and four assists.
Dodge County travels to Swainsboro for a huge region game with the Tigers on Friday, October 30.
Kickoff is set at 7:30 p.m.
