Dodge County High School is proud to announce Aubrey Corbitt as this year’s homecoming parade grand marshal.
Corbitt was born in Homerville, Georgia, on August, 7, 1954. Raised in Lakeland, Georgia, Corbitt graduated from Lanier County High School in 1972. He then attended Shorter College in Rome on a basketball scholarship, later transferring to Valdosta State College, where he graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in education in physical education and health. Furthering his education, Corbitt also earned a Master’s degree from VSU in Administration & Supervision in 1986 and a Specialist’s degree in the same area in 1989.
Corbitt began his teaching career at Whigham High School in 1976, where he taught social studies, coached track and basketball, and also served as athletic director. While at Whigham, Corbitt was awarded the GACA Region Coach of the Year nineteen times and State Coach of the Year a total of six times.
Corbitt would eventually move to Eastman with his family in 1986, where he first served as assistant principal at Dodge County High School. He would then move to the position of principal of DCHS in 1998, and would remain as the leader there for fourteen years. During his direction at the helm, Dodge County High School would earn many prestigious awards and titles including: Georgia School of Excellence in 1992, 1994, & 2000; National Title I Distinguished School in 1999; Georgia Title I Distinguished School in 2000, 2001, & 2002; High School of the Month by the Atlanta Journal Constitution in November of 2000; and Georgia “Dream School” given by the Georgia State School Superintendent in 1999. In 2002, Corbitt left the high school to serve as the system’s superintendent for five years.
“I wanted to have a part of building the new high school; that’s one of the main reasons I wanted to pursue that position,” he said, adding that he is especially proud of the new building but still missed his former position. “I missed the day-to-day interaction with the students.” Corbitt would eventually retire in that position in 2007 with thirty-one years experience in education.
Now, Corbitt says he gets to work with two groups of people that he loves. As the business development officer at CB&T, Corbitt works with students through the Tiger Club program and adults through Senior Banker.
Corbitt is the son of Benny and Leba Fullwood of Lakeland. He and his wife, Debbie, have two children, Clay and Lindsay, and are members of First Baptist Church in Eastman.
