The Dodge County High Squaws basketball team entered the GHSA State Basketball Tournament for the 40th time in school history last Friday, February 25, 2011. The Squaws entered the tournament as a number two seed from Region 3AA after taking the runner-up spot in the region tournament to Laney.
The Dodge County High Squaws basketball team entered the GHSA State Basketball Tournament for the 40th time in school history last Friday, February 25, 2011. The Squaws entered the tournament as a number two seed from Region 3AA after taking the runner-up spot in the region tournament to Laney.
The Squaws (18-9) defeated the Cook County Hornets who were a number three seed from Region 1AA by a score of 53-31 in Eastman. Dodge County will now travel to Vidalia High School on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. to take on the undefeated second ranked Vidalia Lady Indians (28-0).
If the Squaws advance past Vidalia they will travel to Savannah State University on Saturday, March 5, 2011 to take on the winner of the Northeast Macon/Dublin game at either 4:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. (yet to be determined) in the Elite Eight round.
The Squaws opened the first quarter against the Lady Hornets of Cook on a 12-0 run, with Cook not scoring their first basket until 32.3 mark of the first quarter. Dodge led 14-2 after one quarter. Kadaysha Jones led with five points in the first quarter including a three-pointer. Michelle Mitchell followed with four.
Dodge County outscored the Lady Hornets 13-12 in the second quarter to keep their lead at 27-14 at the half. Kadejah Carson and Mitchell each had five points to lead the Squaws in the second.
Dodge continued to play good ball in the third quarter as Jones and Mitchell each had four points in the quarter to lead the Squaws to a 40-20 score after three. Jaye Hilliard also added a three-pointer in the quarter. Mitchell scored the first six points for Dodge in the first two minutes of fourth quarter, before Coach Carol Smith started substituting from her bench.
The Squaws took the first round victory, 53-31.
Final scoring for the Squaws was Michelle Mitchell, 20 points; Kadayasha Jones, 12 points; Kadejah Carson, nine points; Markesha McLoud, six points; Jaye Hilliard, five points; Morgan Weeks, two points.
