The director of Eastman’s Youth Development Center, Todd Weeks, has been replaced.
Department of Juvenile Justice Commissioner Amy Howell has named George Smith as the new director of the prison.
Smith has 30 years in the corrections field.
The replacement comes in the wake of two prison riots in less than a year and two employees there that have been injured by inmates in less than two weeks.
In the latest riot, on Sunday night (January 30, 2011) at approximately 7:35 p.m., Dodge County law enforcement officers responded to a call for assistance from juvenile correctional officers at the Eastman Youth Development Facility (YDF).
Dodge County Sheriff’s deputies and Eastman Police officers arrived to find that a juvenile correctional officer had been assaulted by several inmates and that there were over sixty (60) inmates in multiple pods in two (2) dormitories who would not return to their cells.

Since this a state job even though Todd is inept. He probably will be reassigned at a higher salary. You have to love GA politics.

Although I have seen the very scenario you have mentioned take place my greatest observation is this. When will the State of Georgia wake up and realize these 17 to 20 year old young men are exactly that...young MEN? They are not children and they are not delicate. No, I am not proposing a "whoop-a**" policy but let's be realistic. Physical force, when appropriate, can and will persuade someone to do the will of the "state" when it comes to complying with the rules and regulations of a facility to maintain order and discipline. It protects the inmates, the staff of the facility and the public. They are not little children. They are capable of adult like harm to others.

I have a big concern over this facility, I have a son there and he has been seriously injured by other inmates. The facility lacks enough employees to run the facility. I hear about the injures toward the staff but what is the concerns about inmates getting a tooth kicked out his mouth, both jaws disfigured, and eye ball messed up from the bone in the back of his eye was sticking. Everytime I see something about Eastman YDC its talking about the staff. The neglience of the staff towards the inmates should be a concern and important of each one life. They are to be rehabiltaed not fighting for your life. Let's turn the table and see to these inmates the proper way! Get some love in your hearts and take care of these inmates as if they were your own children. 2294540810
