The Eastman city council voted in a split decision Monday night to do away with a truck ordinance they had voted in earlier this year.
The ordinance did not allow trucks over six wheels to be parked in residential sections of Eastman.
Therrell Cobb, a local truck owner, was affected by the ordinance and had been working with councilman Buddy Pittman to try and come up with a way he could keep his truck, and work on it at his home in a residential area of Eastman.
At the council meeting on Monday, September 27, Pittman came up with a variance with certain stipulations that would allow Cobb to keep his truck at home.

How much did the signs (and removal) cost the taxpayers of Eastman?

Reckon Burnham & Rawlins will ever agree? Wonder why does Idelle Walker vote with Burnham all the time? And how did Pittman manage to come up with an opinion that was different than Burnham's? Sometimes I think the bunch of them just want to argue and nevermind what is good for the city. And one more thing, how does one go about getting a felony record forgiven enough to become a nurse and hold public office?

I think we need a City Planner. Obviously we do not have one. I heard a rumor that the city was considering one-way streets. Beginning at the Chic King, turning the street going north by City Hall as one way. Continuing on by Fred's, cutting between the Citizen's Bank and the unemployment office and down by the railroad tracks, all the way to 14th avenue. South-bound traffic would follow the Cochran/McRae highway, passing by the Bank of Eastman and all the way back out to the split at Chic King. This route would put places like CVS, Pizza Hut & Fred's in the middle of the North-bound one way lanes and the South-bound one way lanes. It would ease the congestion that is GROWING and make it easier for the many trucks that come through Eastman. Get cracking, City Planners, who-ever you may be and start PLANNING for our growth!!!

Utiity lines should be a minimum of 14'6" which is out of reach for any 18 Wheeler. Some people are just trying to make an honest living, pay their bills, pay their taxes and do what is right with out being messed with!

Well, it obviously is not high enough. My line got snatched three times in two months when they were trying to come into my neighborhood. I have not had the problem since the signs went up. My phone line has been where it is for over 20 years and there was no problem until 18 wheelers started going down the street to get to WPA highway!

Hey, I am a planner, and what you really need is an ordinance which bans THROUGH trucks on local streets - that way truckers with big rigs, moving vans, could drive along the streets without having a variance. Also, for the "anonymous" person - ask that the phone company elevate your lines a little - if it happened more than once - surprised the garbage truck does not take out the line!

I would like a job working for the city. Maybe I could help the city officials draw up a plan to safely reroute the big rigs away from Griffin Ave or Griffin ST. so there will be less accidents on this stretch of roadway. It would be nice to see a sign that says NO trucks over 6 wheels or 18 wheels allowed on this street. Develiveries can be made to businesses without using this main thourogh fare. Well, if I don't get hired I will sat back and pray for the safety of other drivers.

I am a concerned citizen and the truth is that all of the complainers like having everything they need in there homes.. Look around your house and you will see that evertything in it was delivered by a truck..from toilet paper to food to furniture. Instead of complaining about the trucks how about appreciating the jobs they do. Have you ever considered how aggreavated a truck drivers gets when he is waiting for you in busy traffic? Have you ever thought about that a truck cannot just "suddenly" stop?!? When you are complaining about the truck you are not thinking about what is on that truck might be what comes to your house!!

NEVER said I didn't appreciate. Only the fact that I live in a neighborhood with TWO MAJOR highways on the outskirts of my neighborhood that should be used instead of messing up lines! Oh by the way... if you look at 13wmaz.com. Truck took out some power lines in a town....all Im saying.
