He did this for free for the good of the citizens of Dodge County. Before a new boat landing could be built, Peacock died and Durwood Graham took up the cause, once again doing it for no fee as a service to the citizens of Dodge County.
After a new site was picked, it was believed that the landing could be built using county equipment and employees, so that is what the commissioners were told. Later, it was discovered that for some of the work, outside contractors would have to be used. Did commission chairman Dan McCranie and county manager Kelly Bowen keep the commissioners informed…no. That was a mistake. Were bids always taken for the work…no, and that was a mistake. Pipe had to be purchased for the roadway leading to the landing. Were bids taken…no, but, Graham found pipe from an individual and it was purchased for over $10,000.00 less than it would have cost from a company that sold pipe.
Did the county spend any more money than they would have anyway? No, they were saved at least $10,000.00.
None of these things were done purposely to hide anything from the commissioners; they were just oversights and a lack of communication, plain and simple. And no, it wasn’t done the right way, but that has been corrected. From now on, the commissioners will be informed, bids will be taken whenever they should be and things will be done the correct way.
So, let’s move on and get the boat ramp project back on track and give the citizens a way they can get on the river and enjoy it.
The comment has been made over the last several months to certain people of this county that they would not be doing any of the work on the boat landing because they would not share the money. You can play this off as innocent as you like but most of the people in this county really do know what the truth is. And yes, it is time to move on, move on from the way things have been done in the past in this county. And how does anyone know for sure that the work could not have been provided for less expense if no bids were taken. There you go, blowing smoke again. Come on. We are not all as ignorant as you might think. Thank God someone has finally stepped up and is trying to do something about the corruptness being provided by our elected officials. Notes should be taken from Sheriff Jeff Hinson on how to be fair and honest. He is doing a great job.
