Dear Editor,
$.75 is too much for a paper!

I wish I could count how many times I have been on the other end of this statement. Too much?

As a matter of fact it’s not enough. With the rising cost of operations of local newspapers, we are lucky to still have ours.

It’s amazing to me what people spend money on just to turn around and complain about the cost of a paper.

I have the privilege of knowing what it takes to publish a newspaper, and it is a complicated beast. In today’s work environment, the concept of a deadline is normally not in play. For those of you who do work on a deadline, you can appreciate the work that goes into pushing out a paper by the seat of your pants on Tuesday so that your customers have the latest news on Wednesday.

I will admit I am a little biased. I have been a part of The Dodge County News off and on now for around ten years. They have never given me a paycheck. Why? I ask them not to. I am listed as sports photographer because I love doing it. It helps my community. It makes the high school kids happy to see their photos in the paper and gives me much needed exposure. That’s the bottom line.

What skill do you have to give to your local paper? Can you write? Business owners, have you ever placed an ad in the paper? I have had many parents thank me for the photos in the paper. That is all the pay I need. I have kids on facebook that brag to their friends when they make the paper. Stop complaining about what a newspaper costs and give a little of your time to make it better.
