Chester man dies in house fire

At 9:25 p.m. on September 12, the Chester Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire at a residence on Wynne Street (Georgia Highway 257) in Chester.

Firefighters discovered the charred body of a deceased elderly man at the residence.

Dodge County sheriff’s investigators and the State Fire Marshall’s Office are investigating the fire and death.

Law enforcement officials state that the preliminary investigation indicates that the fire appears to have started accidently.

Officials are continuing to investigate. The body has been sent to the Georgia State Crime Lab in Atlanta. Dodge County Coroner Joe Smith is not releasing the name of the deceased at this time pending positive identification by the lab. He stated that the body will have to be identified from DNA evidence.

Officials were on the fire scene until after 1:00 a.m. in the morning. Chester firefighters were assisted by the Georgia Department of Corrections Fire Team from Dodge C.I. and the Roddy Volunteer Fire Department.
