Armed robbers hit Chauncey bank

Dodge County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a bank robbery Thursday morning, September 2, at the Citizens Bank and Trust (CB&T) Company in Chauncey.

An armed gunman accosted a bank employee entering the bank for work to gain entry inside the bank for himself and another armed gunman.

There were no physical injuries to any of the employees during the robbery.

The suspects stole a large amount of cash from the bank before fleeing the scene, after locking employees inside the bank.

Employees of the bank were able to contact the CB&T bank in Helena to inform them of the robbery.

Helena branch employees then called the Telfair-Wheeler 911 Center, who notified the Dodge-Wilcox 911 Center. The suspects fled the bank prior to any law enforcement arriving at the scene.

Law enforcement officials were following several leads in the case. One lead carried local officers to Blackshear in Pierce County. When officers approached a vehicle, a suspect in the case fled from officers leading them on a vehicle pursuit. The suspect lost control of the fleeing vehicle and wrecked. The suspect was taken into custody.

Law enforcement officials executed a search warrant at the suspect’s home in Blackshear. Investigators recovered an undisclosed amount of cash, taken from the CB&T bank, and other evidence from the bank robbery at the suspect’s residence.

The suspect has been charged with a host of traffic related charges in Pierce County and has been charged with armed robbery in Dodge County. Officials say the suspect may face additional charges in connection with the case. At least two (2) additional arrests are expected soon in the case.

Law enforcement officials are withholding the suspect’s name at this time. The investigation is ongoing by the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
